Model: EAP772
Hardware Version: V2
Firmware Version: 1.2.2

After a mishap with some recent decorating at home, i killed the cat5 network cable between my lounge and home office. unfortunately i only noticed this after finishing the redecorating and was not going to pull up the flooring.

Network was rock solid with that setup and never saw issues.

So with this broken cable, I used it as a reason to future-proofing upgrade above 1gig and went with wifi 7 (2x EAP772's) to replace that broken cable. Intention was to use 6ghz band for the wifi backhaul, with 2.4 & 5ghz for clients although currently seems the mesh is using any band it wants.

Unfortunately i'm seeing that mesh backhaul link fail frequently. it's failed 3 times in about the last hour. yesterday was atleast twice in a 12hour window. Not only does it take a few minutes to bring the LAN network back, it then takes another minute or two for the internet to come back as the router periodically attempts reconnection. So we can have internet disrupted for approximately 5 minutes.

EAP772 distance is around 10-15 meters so this is not a weak signal.

Clients connected to the EAP772's do not appear to be loosing direct connectivity to the AP, so seems specific to the mesh side.

Heres my current Omada map:

My router (opnsense) connects to Cab-2.5g_08-AD. Being UK fibre, i then run PPPoE via a vlan through to the LivingRoom-OE-49 which connects to the ONT and out to ISP.

Based on uptimes, then it is the link itself failing, and not a device reset issue (current uptimes are >1.5days)

i've ran multiple sustained pings to switches to determine the failure and from a client connected to the EAP772-61-F0, only the LivingRoom-OE-49 is failing (& anything beyond it)

As a temporary measure and for further testing, i've re-connected my older EAP653 to serve clients, and disabled 2.4ghz & SSID's on the EAP772's so those should be backhaul/mesh only. Will see if this improves the issue.

any advice on whats going on here?

Hi @veehexx

Thanks for the info.

From the iwconfig result, everything is normal on the EAP.

What device is plugged into port 8 of the switch?

Please disable Loop Detection for this port and see if it helps:

(Ports > enable Profile Overrides)

in an effort to try and isolate the issue i've disabled 2.4 & 5ghz on the EAP772s (still with no SSIDs) so it's running 6ghz only for mesh. Changing from 320mhz width down to the default 80 width has helped from this morning, but I've still seen 2 disconnects since doing this.

I've added pings into the diagnostics for the EAP's too.

From a wired connection into Cab-0E-4C, the CAB-2-5G_08-AD, and both EAP772's ping solid. This sugests the mesh is ok. Only LivingRoom-0E-49 looses connection.

Looks like i'm dealing with a broadcast storm. I've enabled storm control limits based on https://support.omadanetworks.com/ca/document/13281/ (which i thought i already had configured globally, but clearly was done on just on a few select ports).

time to get wireshark out!!

Hi  @veehexx

Thanks for posting here.

These logs were generated because the storm control you configured has been triggered. They should not be related to the mesh issue.

When the mesh was disabled, did you check the LED status of the mesh EAP772-36-80?

When next time the issue happened, please go to the following page and run iwconfig command for the uplink EAP-61-f0. and reply with us the results.

  @Vincent-TP

Indeed the storm control was a different issue. partly HomeAssistant scanning an entire /21 range (it's been moved to a more suitable /25 IoT vlan) I've also changed the storm thresholds to 40mbit (40% of slowest 100mbit link). I've not see any storm issues so far since those changes.

I've only just seen your response today. Yesterday I replaced the EAP772's mesh with a network cable for further testing, which has been 100% perfect for 24hours - not a single ping loss or stability issue so i'm confident the network is good in terms of potential loops and no mis-behaving clients.

I'll put the EAP772 mesh back in place soon and run the iwconfig cmd. Does this matter when i do the iwconfig ie: does the port block issue need to be actively occuring, or can it be done anytime after i see the fault, even if it's not actively occuring?

also, can i just confirm you want this done on the root AP? based on what i've found upto now, the mesh appears to be stable (i can ping both EAP772 AP's), but the EAP772-36-80 seems to get it's wired interface dropped periodically.

Hi  @veehexx

Thanks for the reply.

We need to run the command when the mesh is disconnected. We want to know the status of the wireless interface of the uplink EAP when the issue happens.

@Vincent-TP i just edited my last post that you probably didnt see: Can i just confirm you want this done on the root AP? based on what i've found upto now, the mesh appears to be stable (i can ping both EAP772 AP's reliably), but the EAP772-36-80 seems to get it's wired interface dropped periodically.

Hi @veehexx

Yes, I was saying the root AP.

When the issue happened (mesh disconnected), the mesh AP should also have been disconnected from the controller, and you won't be able to run the command with a disconnected AP.

Logs tab shows the following:

so, i can see that it thinks vlan1 has a loop. however the ONLY thing thats changed is from: 1x 20m cable through the house between switches (same port & port profile) to: 2x cables into EAP772 & EAP772 and using the mesh to link the two switches together.

it appears the EAP772 in mesh are somehow causing a periodic loop, with the downstreams APs' wired port being disabled.

Something that has been niggling me is how i'm expecting this to work. I'm using the EAP772's in mesh (currently 6ghz only, no SSID broadcast) to act as a bridge between floors of the house. I couldnt find any reason this shouldn't work when i researched this deployment pre-purchased.

  @Vincent-TP

Port8 is currently to the EAP772-36-80 AP wired por. Appologies, i didnt mention that change and the original map screenshot had it connected to port2. i basically used port8 to test a wired link for 24hours that produced no loop issues, and then moved the EAP772's to the same ports to eliminate any port-specific differences/issues.

Good call on disabling loopback control. I've been so fixated on the loop issue, disabling loopback didn't even cross my mind! I'll see how it behaves over the next 24hours and report back.

thanks!
