Hi, I want to use my router as a VPN server so that I can connect to it from a different country.

Here's what I've done-

1) Enabled VPN server

2) Created Dynamic DNS

3) Changed config file and entered my Dynamic DNS.

Even after following these steps, when I try to connect to my server via OpenVPN, it shows the connection timed out.

  @Snehil

I see. If you are paying a monthly fee for a public IP address to your ISP, then either the ISP "forgot" to activate your public IP address or the modem in your apartment is a NAT device that translates the public IP address into a private IP address in the range 10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255.

I think you should contact your ISP and ask them.

Hi@Snehil,

Welcome to our community.

May I know if your network topology diagram is as follows:

ISP modem—router )))((( client devices

(Note: — stands for wired connection,)))((( stands for wireless connection )

As a server, router needs a public IP so that it can guarantee the connection remotely.

1). Please kindly check whether you have a public WAN/Internet IP address.

2). Also, we do suggest to set your public WAN/Internet IP address as static IP. If your internet service provider refuses to set it as static, it is suggested for you to use DDNS service on TP-Link router(SOHO Router) to bind your dynamic public WAN/Internet IP address to a domain name. You may refer to How to set up TP-LINK DDNS on TP-Link Wireless Router.

Here is the FAQ may help you: How do I troubleshoot if the OpenVPN is not connecting

Yes, this is my network topology diagram. 1) I do but this is dynamic and my ISP charges a monthly fee for this service. 2) I have created a DDNS server and input that it the config file, not able to connect, tried to put my public IP in the config and still not able to connect. I have checked and tried all the other troubleshooting methods on this website.

Hi,

Just to be absolutely sure that everything is right with the router's Internet (WAN) IP address, can you please go to one of the many "what is my ip" websites on the Internet and then verify the IPv4 address reported by the website is identical to the Internet IP address reported by your Archer C6 ?

  @Snehil

They should be the same, but you cannot just enter the IP address given by the website into your Archer C6.

Instead we need to find out the actual reason why they are not the same.

What is the "Connection Type" shown by the Archer C6?

Where is the blue WAN port of the Archer C6 connected to? Another device you got from the ISP? If yes, are you able to log into that ISP device and check whether it shows an IP address that is identical to the IPv4 address shown by the "what is my ip" website?

  @woozle

My network setup is like this->

Apartment modem (This is centralized i think and on the terrace) -> Wire inside the wall -> Archer c6. There is nothing in between and I cant access anything in between modem and router

  @Snehil

Have you previously been able to access your home network from the outside via your public IP address? (I mean before you tried to use OpenVPN server on the Archer C6)

Can you please double-check that the IP address x.x.184.192 of your Archer C6 does not fall within any of the following four sections of IP addresses?

10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255
172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255
192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255
100.64.0.0 - 100.127.255.255
