Model: Deco X20
Hardware Version: V2
Firmware Version:

My deco x20's have worked fine the last 4 years i have used them. They have been behind my ISP BT smart Hub as a second router (in router mode) with the decos being in dynamic IP internet setup working fine handling WiFi and ethernet connections.

I have learned this can potentially be a problematic setup and want to eliminate any potential issues due to double NAT(ing) myself as my ISP router does not support bridge mode.

I have set them up in PPPoE mode with the main node connected directly to the ONT as i have FTTP and nothing but problems.

Unstable everything, disconnects every 10 seconds on any device, even ethernet connections, speeds all over the place, very clearly not working correctly but works perfect back in Dynamic IP mode with ISP router backed.

I have entered correct username and password : bthomehub@btbroadband.com - password: BT with no other settings changed. This illuminated the deco green and allows internet access but as mentioned is very unstable.

I have been through TP-Links scripted process and they determine my decos are defective but too old to replace under warranty.

Is there any other things i could do?

TIA

I have since solved this matter now.

Turns out my IPv6 was never working whilst deco was running and only worked when connected with ISP router only.

All I needed to do was change 'Get IPv6 address' to Non-Address under IPv6 settings and everything is fine.

Nobody could give me this information, I had to find it after scanning through multiple BT/EE forum posts.

I'm unsure of a few things though;

  • The weird glitches deco was having when setup wrong (Unstable and constant disconnection) was this normal? It was set to Auto but I've now since seen more people with this issue when trying to setup IPv6.
  • Why this information was so hard to gain, ISP couldn't provide anything other than username and password after 30 minutes on the phone explaining what PPPoE was.
  • TP link hotline customer service deemed my deco's faulty after only asking me to turn off my beamforming and explaining it has not fixed my issue. Kinda disappointing right?

  @Matthew212

Hi, thank you very much for the feedback.

Have you tried to set Deco X20 into "Access Point" mode, which could also avoid the double NAT issue:

How to set up Deco to work in Access Point mode

Best regards.

  @David-TP

Yes access point mode works fine and i understand that will solve the double NAT. I would prefer to use the features in router mode if i can solve this PPPoE issue.

So good update.

I have disabled IPv6 only to find that the issue seems to have gone away completely.

I had it setup as follows; PPPoE type / Synced to IPv4 account / Get IPv6 address - Auto / Prefix Delegation enabled / DNS - Auto / Assigned type - DHCPv6.

I have read online about BT requires a /56 prefix but i see no option anywhere to input this.
