Knowledge Base User Tips for UPNP
Overview
UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) is a set of networking protocols that allows devices to discover each other and establish functional network services for data sharing, communication, and entertainment. It enables devices on a network to automatically configure port forwarding and other settings, facilitating easy communication between devices without manual intervention.
Typical Scenarios
Online Gaming
Gaming consoles like Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch use UPnP to automatically open ports on your router, which is necessary for connecting with other players in multiplayer sessions.
Smart Home Automation
Smart speakers such as Amazon Echo and Google Home can use UPnP to play music from a UPnP server on the network, access IoT (Internet of Things) devices, and control various smart home functions.
Media Streaming & Content Sharing
UPnP-enabled applications such as VLC Media Player can retrieve and play multimedia content from a UPnP server on the network. Devices like Apple TV and Roku sticks also use UPnP to connect to your network and access streaming services or content from other local devices.
Security Advice
With the latest firmware upgrades, the UPNP feature is disabled by default to prevent the following potential security risks:
- Malicious applications can exploit UPnP to open ports without user consent, creating vulnerabilities.
- Device Exposure: UPnP can expose devices directly to the internet, making them susceptible to attacks.
To securely make use of the UPnP feature, please try to:
- Keep UPnP disabled unless needed.
You can find the UPNP on/off switch under:
- For Router: Log in with Web admin UI. Go to Advanced > Port forwarding > UPNP.
- For Deco: Open the Deco App. Go to More > Advanced > NAT forwarding > UPNP.
