Hardware Version: V2
Firmware Version: 1.4.9 Build 20250110 Rel. 65349

I have added an OpenVPN client, whose server provides its DNS, which is only accessible via VPN.

Although, after connecting to the OpenVPN server, the router must use the DNS, which is specified in the settings of the server and the OpenVPN client, which must be used after the connection is established.

X50 PoE clients receive a DNS server provided by the ISP.

Because of this, the domains I need will not be resolved. How do I configure that when connecting to the OpenVPN server, clients are given OpenVPN DNS or the router's DNS is broadcasting requests to the DNS of the OpenVPN server?

@iplr Hi, thank you very much for the feedback.

Have you tried to open the .ovpn file via Notepad and manually add the following lines:

dhcp-option DNS <primary_dns_server_ip_address>

for example:

dhcp-option DNS 8.8.8.8
dhcp-option DNS 8.8.4.4

Wait for your reply.

Best regards.

@David-TP Thank you for looking for a solution.

No, I haven't tried that. But as I initially described, the prerequisite is to use DNS, which provides the OpenVPN server for its clients.

If it is not entirely clear why this is, then the DNS server from the OpenVPN server resolves, in addition to public domains, private domains as needed.

Anyway, since OpenVPN transmits the DNS server usage setting to the client, the router must broadcast it to its clients.

  @iplr

Hi, could the extra command lines force the selected VPN Clients to use the DNS servers of the OpenVPN server?

If possible, can you help me run a simple test:

  • Configure the computer to use the same .ovpn file to connect to the OpenVPN server directly
  • Check the used DNS resolver on the computer when accessing the domains.

I checked with the senior engineer, and he thought it was because the OpenVPN server wasn't properly configured to push its DNS servers to the clients. He didn't explain too much, but suggested extra command lines might help to update the DNS servers.

Thank you very much.

Best regards.
