Model: Archer VR300
Hardware Version: V2
Firmware Version: 1.6.0 0.8.0 v00a2.0 Build 240913 Rel.41017n

I am restricting access to the internet for one of my PCs using parental controls and a whitelist. The problem I am having is that there is an application that sends an email using smtp. When the parental controls are active the email will not send. It sends fine if I deactivate parental controls. I have added the smtp server address into the whitelist, the IP address of the smtp server and just the domain of the email provider and none of them allow the email to send. Is someone able to advise how to get smtp to be whitelisted? Tahnks.

Hello@Glen_R ,

Thanks for contacting our community.

Here are some suggestions for your case:
1. Double-check the format of the whitelist entries: Ensure you are entering the correct domain names (e.g., smtp.example.com) and not just the base domain. Try adding both the whole SMTP server domain and any related subdomains.
2. Test with Parental Controls disabled: As you mentioned, the email sends successfully when Parental Controls are off, which confirms the router is blocking the SMTP traffic.
3. Consider using Access Control instead: If your goal is to restrict general internet access but allow specific applications, you might find Access Control (found under Advanced > Security > Access Control) more flexible. You can use Blacklist mode to block internet access for certain devices, or Whitelist mode to only allow specific devices.

According to the VR300 user guide:

"Access Control is used to block or allow specific client devices to access your network (via wired or wireless) based on a list of blocked devices (Blacklist) or a list of allowed
devices (Whitelist)."

That means if you choose a Blacklist, these device won't be able to connect to VR300 at all.

For what you're trying to achieve, the Parental Controls is the feature you need:

"Enable Content Restriction and select the restriction mode.
1 ) In Blacklist mode, the controlled devices cannot access any websites containing
the specified keywords during the Effective Time period.
2 ) In Whitelist mode, the controlled devices can only access websites containing
the specified keywords during the Effective Time period."

@Joseph-TP thanks for responding. As you say, it looks like the email protocols or ports are blocked by parental controls.

I looked at access controls, but they seem to apply to.all devices and I just want to restrict a few select devices.

Is there any way of blocking a specific device (by IP or MAC or wharever) to just select sites and email?
