Model: Deco M5
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version: 1.9.2

Some backstory:

I grabbed 2 spare units I had lying around and have set it up in my new place. I've got a node downstairs (2 storey home) that's connected to our router via ethernet (cat6) and another node upstairs in the hallway. My study is upstairs so the important node is the one upstairs.

However, the speed is horrendous.

The speed from the provider is meant to be 200mbps. Ran a few speed tests and router shows 200mbps, while main deco node gives me 190-200mbps downstairs. The node upstairs however is giving me 40-80mbps.

I've turned off WiFi connectivity for my router (just saw this as a potential fix on Google). I'm completely clueless when it comes to mesh systems so any help is appreciated.

A couple of questions:

1. Is this mainly due to an outdated model and would purchasing newer models solve this issue?

2. The way this house is structured (note: rental so I can't redo electrical wires for more sockets etc.) - the connection point for router is downstairs and the staircase is enclosed (walls on each side). Node upstairs is pretty close to the staircase and I'd say is about 15-20m from the main node. Signal I get upstairs is "Medium". Is there any way to improve this other than placing the 2nd node elsewhere? As I'm limited with power points and can't install ethernet cables that require drilling from the outside (definitely do not prefer having a cable running through the entire inside of my house)

Thanks!

Sorry for the double posting but to add on since I can't edit within 24hrs: I can purchase a pair of X50's but they're about USD80 each where I live so I would prefer not wasting my money unless I know it fixes (or even partially fixes) my issue.

Re:Speed halved
Monday

  @Ixorah

Hi, welcome to the community.

Could you please help me run a simple test:

Unplug the upstairs Deco M5, then stand in the same location and connect the mobile phone to the main Deco M5. Check the network speed on the mobile phone when it is connected to the main Deco.

Due to the working pattern and protocol/regulation of Wi-Fi technology, the more wireless hops, the slower the speed would be. This rule applies to any kind of mesh or extender system. For Deco M5, the expected network speed of the satellite Deco would be about 50~60% of the main Deco, varying with the physical distance and wireless interference.

For more details, please refer to https://www.tp-link.com/en/support/faq/3075/

Thank you very much.

Best regards.

Re:Speed halved
Yesterday

@David-TP  thanks for getting back to me.

Just tried what you mentioned. Speedtests are giving me about 50-60mbps when connected to the main node, but signal strength is horrible.

If the limitation of the M5 is getting 50-60% on the second node, would upgrading to a better Deco unit like the X50 improve this and reduce the drop off in speed?

And going off of the diagram in the link, would I get the full 200mbps (or close to it) if I were to use an ethernet cable from the 2nd node to my PC? Despite the main node and 2nd node not being connected via ethernet.
