AX72 Factory resets itself

Model: Archer AX72
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.45

Hi,

So I have had 3 AX72 routers setup for quite some time, and they have been great - not the quickest if using the web interface.. but not the slowest either.

The config I had (and still have is):

Internet --> AX72 router (main)

Then from AX72, using wires

AX72 router (main) --> AX72 (satellite 1)

AX72 router (main) --> AX72 (satellite 2)

I used to get a weird thing where sometimes I would have to turn all the routers off and then load them in a set order.. but on the whole, it was great.

Well seeing as I have a deadspot in my house, I thought - lets grab 1 more and have

AX72 router (main) --> AX72 (satellite 3)

Since then - and it was at the exact time I upgraded to the latest firmware (1.45) my main router has factory reset itself twice.

Once randomly at 10pm at night - unfortunatly i was away on business so had to wait until late the next day to fix.

And then today, I have to then go through the process of setting up the main one (without any wires in), then connecting each easy mesh in order to get them all set back up.

I guess I have two questions - is 3 satellites not supported?

Is there a potential bug in the latest firmware that is causing the main router to shutdown and factory reset itself - and by that I mean - full lock up and when rebooted it is using the wifi and passcode on the back of the router - which I obviously don't use once setup, and all settings inside have wiped (password etc)

If you do support 3 satellites, is this a bug in 1.45 that has been introduced?

Thanks in advance

Just to note that all devies are on the same firmware (I ensured thet before setup) and the 4th port on the AX72 router (main) goes to a gigabit switch, for the rest of the house hard wired connections

Hello @Tail_uk ,

Thanks for contacting our community.

When you say "main router reset itself," do you mean it will immediately return to factory mode? Do you need to complete the entire configuration process again?

Could you check whether anyone else has access to manage your network?

Please remove a router (not the new one) and test if the same behavior occurs.

How many clients do you have on the entire network? Please turn off some wired devices and see if there's any improvement.

Hi,

To answer some of your questions:

So I have had two different errors

1) Sunday one of the easy mesh devices (all with their own connection to the main Router in star configuration), factory reset itself and turned back into full router mode..

two routers on the network collapsed everything. And it was not until I removed that one (which incidentally was the new one), did the main Router then start even responding, but I could not login at all, rebooting that device caused it to factory reset.

Post 1 I completed a full factory resetting each devices (on Sunday), setting into easymesh satellite mode on 3 of them.

Fully configuring the main Router and then slowing bringing things back on (WiFi easy mesh to a device, then move to wired), I got everything up and that worked for a few days.

2) Yesterday's one, I turned off a ALG setting, as realised I had not changed them after the factory reset on Sunday.. the device locked up, the easy mesh and wifi carried on, but not from that device.

And eventually I saw a amber light for the internet. When I tried to connect, nothing (i.e. 192.168.87.1), but then I noticed a new WiFi on my phone, it was the factory set WiFi for the router.

So last night, for the 2nd time this week, I factory reset every device, but set the 3 "extention" devices up as AP mode. I have then fully setup the main Router, set assigned ips (in DHCP) for the APs, and then connected it all up.

Staggering the channels used and now it is working the same.

Some notes:

I never used smart steering (or whatever it's called), as found it didn't play nice with some older devices.

All ax72 devices have an assigned IP address.

As this is my home internet I can't really start turning things off etc... but what I would say:

The main Router running in easy mesh mode ran at a CPU of around 80%.

Now it is around 40%

All devices have good airflow.

I have since offloaded the DHCP to a different device and not the router

Cheers

Hello @Tail_uk ,

I'm sorry for not getting back to you sooner.

Is your complete topology as follows, including the DHCP server?

[ISP]

└── (WAN)Main AX72 (LAN1-LAN3) ───┬── [AX72-1](AP Mode)

                                                                    ├── [AX72-2](AP Mode)

                                                                    ├── [AX72-3](AP Mode)(new)

                                                                    └── (LAN4) [Switch] ────┬── [PC/NAS/Other clients]

                                                                                                                 └── [DHCP Server]

Are the DHCP request logs you mentioned received on the DHCP server?  In other words, you've now assigned static IP addresses to all Archer AX72s, right?

When setting up the EasyMesh network, did you remove any Satellite units (including existing ones) for comparison? Or does the problem only occur when a new AX72 is added to the EasyMesh network, causing the network to crash and automatically revert to factory mode?

The tech team has been made aware of your case; they will likely reach out to you via email to continue troubleshooting. Please check your email inbox and confirm.

  @Joseph-TP

Hi, and don't worry about how long it's taken, all good as moving to AP mode, although introducing a small drop out (like less than a second) when moving between AP points, it it very stable :)

I also like the fact that I can setup iot ssids on each satellite, so have moved some devices to that, which actually means they don't move to a different access point, and this has fixed some of my Google home device disconnections I was having (which I believe was because the device would move from 2.4ghz to 5ghz and then potentially to another point and then would report "not connected" when asking it something, fixing it to 2.4ghz and one ap has fixed that).

When the above all happened I was not using the DHCP server, that is something I have since setup, as before I was using the ax72 router (main one) as the DHCP, but having to rebuild it a few times meant I decided to migrate.

To answer some questions, yes that's the config, a star config I believe it's called. With the switch being the main Route to all wired devices in the house.

The DHCP log mentioned was seen on the satellite device as well as the main device (if memory serves).

The way I had DHCP setup was :

Main server - using Mac address of easy mesh satellite, set one to 192.168.87.2

On that satellite, leave it as is and don't change to static IP etc, as I would expect the DHCP to provide out the IP address and then the satellite to only report back once every now and again, not every 30 seconds.

So I have tried, and both caused errors:

Having 3 existing easymesh (1 main + 2 satellite) adding the 4th caused it to crash (all on fresh 1.45 firmware).

Starting with all 4 in factory reset mode, building the main Router. Then adding, one at a time each mesh device, and when the 4th one was added it caused the devices to lock up and a reboot reset the main device.

On both times I had set dedicated IP addresses... So it might be linked to that?

I'll reply to the email now. Thanks
