How to translate names into MAC Addresses in the TL-WPA8631P web interface?
Thursday
Model: TL-WPA8631P
Hardware Version: V4
Firmware Version: 4.0.2 Build 20230817 Rel.58509

I have recently added a TL-WPA8631P to a powerline network based on a TL-PA8033P Kit. This was to add a WiFi boost for my EV Charger, which has been dropping off. The main router is a Plusnet Smart Hub Two. I used the WPS setup method to configure the WPA8631 WiFi to match the router. This worked for 2.4GHz, but not 5GHz: separate issue for another day. The Charger only works on 2.4GHz and is connected through the WPA8631.

When I use the WPA8631's web interface, I can see which clients are connected, but it only displays MAC Addresses. I had to use the Plusnet router's list of known devices to work out that one of them was the Charger. There is another device, which I think is a Smart Plug. It would be so much easier if it was possible to translate the MAC Addresses into device names. Is there a way to do this? I can't find one.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi,

One suggestion would be to install "Fing Desktop" on a computer that is connected to your network.  (www.fing.com)

You will likely still need to do some guessing, as perfect device identification isn't really possible to achieve.

Especially smart devices do often show up with descriptions that are not very telling. For example, I have a smart plug that is shown as "Smart Device - Espressif". Espressif is a company that makes chips used in smart devices. But what chip is used in device X is normally not known to the user.

Hello @David-B99 ,

Thanks for contacting our community.

Currently, there's no direct way to convert a device's MAC address into a device name.
Regarding your request, I think you can start a new thread by clicking here.
If other users have the same request, they can vote. We'll also provide feedback to the relevant departments to evaluate whether to improve and refine the information displayed in the clients list.

Thanks for the suggestion. I mostly have a list of devices and IP+MAC addresses already in the router admin. I wouldn't mind copying names across, if there was a facility to provide a name for each device, much as in the tpPLC app for connected powerline devices.

Thanks, I will do that when the forum posting rules permit.
