I recently added a TL-WPA8631P Extender to my TL-PA9033P powerline network. I used the WPS method to configure the WiFi settings to match the Plusnet Hub Two router, but this only worked for 2.4GHz, despite them only being a couple of feet apart. I tried a couple of times with the same result. Should it work for 5GHz as well?

The Plusnet router uses the same SSID for both and doesn't allow splitting, so maybe it isn't allowed?

The device I needed WiFi for is connected on 2.4GHz with no change of credentials, so that's working. Should I change 5GHz to match or is there a reason why not?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi,

A reason for changing the names of the TL-WPA8631P's Wi-Fi networks to match those of the Plusnet router would be convenience.

A reason for not changing the names of the TL-WPA8631P's Wi-Fi networks to match those of the Plusnet router would be if the Powerline connection is much slower than the speed of your Internet connection, because whenever a client device clings to the Wi-Fi of the Powerline adapter its Internet speed would be limited to whatever speed the Powerline connection can provide.

@woozle Thanks for the prompt reply.

I have the 2.4GHz WiFi set to match the router's SSID and password. That has boosted the available signal where I needed it for the EV Charger, which only uses 2.4GHz (and is now connected). That leaves the 5GHz band on a limb as far as roaming is concerned.

When I've looked, the signal has been weaker than the router's, but I have only checked from devices that are closer to the router. Surely it should be changed so that roaming on 5GHz can work without switching to a different SSID?

As I indicated earlier, if convenience is your main concern, then making the network names of the router and the extender identical would be the way to go.

Also, if your Internet connection is not very fast anyway or if you don't require fast network speeds, then it won't matter whether your client devices choose to connect to the router or the extender.

You just need to be aware of the fact that when router and Powerline extender use the same Wi-Fi name, then a client device might stay connected to the extender even in situations when a connection through the router would provide much better network speeds.

Do you happen to know how fast the network connection through that TL-WPA8631P is?
