Hi, I've a kasa cam from 2018, still works a treat. It sits on an upstairs window looking out to the front of the house. I think it might be time to upgrade.

Unfortunately in the last couple of months we've had people trying car doors, trying the house doors, walking onto the property in ski masks. It's scary reviewing the footage each morning and seeing whats gone on. As they're all masked up they mostly ignore the camera. That leads me to wonder about an upgrade.

I like the camera indoors - it is easy to wire up and also to clean. Plus the front of the house has a very rough, uneven stone texture which is hard to attach anything of substance to. I've seen systems where the camera can switch a lamp or light on, or maybe even trigger an alarm at certain hours (these encroachments are typically 2 to 3AM). As I'm in a busy suburban area on a large street i think this might work well.

My ideal set up is something like this: camera that records 24/7 (doesn't need to store it for more than 24 hours) but also highlights triggers into it's zone, then reacts to them at night time with a lamp or noise. If this isn't possible, an additional indoor camera is fine, though preferably without any wires (got a cat that loves to chew!). The cameras need to be able to switch IR off as at night they cause glare on the window glass. Also no active subscription services please. Any help would be brilliant, the tech has really moved on since I last researched this. Im in the UK, if it makes any difference. Thank you, Mark

Hi,

Welcome to the community, and thank you for taking the time to describe your situation in such detail.

Based on your description,  our wired (always‑powered) Tapo camera models are well‑suited for this type of scenario. When connected to a power source, these cameras support continuous local recording without the need for a subscription, you can use the SD card to record.

And we also offer an Alarm feature, which can be configured to activate sound or lights during specific time periods: How to configure Alarm feature for Tapo Cameras on Tapo app

There is one important usage note we would like to highlight. We do not recommend using any camera to record through a window or glass surface.  If your goal is to monitor an outdoor area, we would strongly recommend considering one of our outdoor wired camera models. These cameras are designed specifically for external environments and provide more stable performance for continuous recording as well as reliable deterrence features.

One important point to note concerns infrared (IR) night vision. If IR mode is turned off, the camera will not be able to clearly capture images in low‑light or nighttime conditions, and in some cases, the scene may not be visible at all.   Currently, none of our camera models are designed or recommended to operate with infrared (IR) turned off in night‑time conditions.

To help you compare specifications and choose a model that best fits your environment and installation preferences, we recommend reviewing our full range of Tapo cameras here:

Hi Mark,

Happy to clarify this for you.

Yes, a hub is not required for this setup. You can use the Smart Actions feature in the Tapo app to create an automation rule. For example, you can set it so that when the Tapo C110 detects motion, a Tapo E27 smart light bulb turns on automatically. This can be configured directly in the app as long as both devices are logged in under the same TP‑Link ID.

For detailed instructions on how to set this up, please refer to the official FAQ here: How to create Smart Action (Automation or Shortcut) on Tapo app

We would also like to gently remind you that the Tapo C110 is designed as an indoor camera. If it is used to monitor outdoor areas from inside the house, especially through a window, it may encounter limitations such as reflections or glare from the glass, particularly at night.

Best Regards
