Model: Deco BE65

Firmware Version: 1.2.0

Hello.

I've just moved from eero to deco.  I have approx 25 esp devices with static IP set on the client side which makes them much more stable for my use case of home assistant. These are all connected to the network and working however I cannot see them in the DECO app.  This is very important for my troubleshooting and tracking of assigned addresses.  it seems a miss that I cannot see ALL devices connected to my network. Devices with wired connection and static IP work.  But not Wi-Fi devices.  This was possible in eero.

I've googled this as found a few threads discussing it (but could not find a feature request in this community).  I have attempted to increase my dynamic range to include these devices range however they are still invisible.   Is this a security risk as devices can authorize on the network but then not be monitored?

Can it be considered that all devices authorized by the router are visible I'm client list?

Regards, Terrence

Hi,
Please try configuring one of your ESP devices to automatically obtain an IP address, then check whether it can successfully obtain an IP address and display it in the Deco app client list after connecting to the Deco network. If so, it is recommended that you reserve an IP address for the ESP device on the Deco network so it appears in the Deco app, and use the same IP address for stable use with Home Assistance.

@Solla-topee thanks for the reply.  I will try that.  But that is a lot of work as I need to bring many devices back to my PC and update via cable as some files are too big for OTA.  I know that is my problem, but it seems a shortfall in the DECO system.  Many people like to use client-configured static IPs and it has been a common method of networking for decades.  I understand how to reserve IPs within DECO and have used that method for some devices that do not allow client-config of IP.

Two more points:

1. I know it is low risk for home customers, but if there was a bad actor trying to get on my network, if their device authenticated using static IP method, I have no visibility that device has joined my network or have any ability to monitor/block it through the DECO system. Only if it joins via DHCP.  I like to have a list of ALL devices on my network and don't think that is unreasonable expectation.  In all ecosystems I have used that function exists.

2. I did change a device (REOLINK camera) from static IP to DHCP.  After reset of camera and network it was assigned the same IP and still invisible.  Maybe once it has used that method DECO keeps some memory of it in the background?

Hi,
For the phenomenon that the client device with a static IP does not appear in the Deco app, please confirm the following information.
  1. Does your Deco BE65 work in the Router mode or AP mode? How many Deco units do you have? Please describe the network diagram.
  2. Does the client device used within the local network only?

If your Reolink camera does not have internet when connecting to the Deco's Wi-Fi, it's suggested to connect it to another router's Wi-Fi network or to the hotspot Wi-Fi on your phone, then check if it works.

Best Regards
