Dear Tapo support,

Many Tapo cameras are having issues with frame skipping and frame jumping on playback for recorded footage. This problem seems to be consistently ongoing for many years.

You can check the widespread reports online, if you search for: “Tapo camera skipping,” “Tapo lag,” or “Tapo frame jumping” reveal that this has been a persistent issue affecting multiple users and different cameras.

Has anybody from Tapo fixed this problem yet? Please google the problem, you will see many people are describing this issue.

Today i am having this issue with my two C560WS cameras on Tapo cloud storage.

This issue is causing serious inconvenience and concern. Recorded footage is unreliable due to frequent frame skipping (4–15 seconds at a time). This creates critical gaps in recordings, making it impossible to trust the system for its intended use.

I have invested heavily in the Tapo ecosystem, including multiple devices across my property, I have spent in excess of £1000+. Most recently, I purchased two C560WS AI cameras, which are exhibiting frame skipping issue.

Summary:

  • Initially, both cameras worked flawlessly for approximately two months.
  • Without any changes to my setup, playback recordings began skipping intermittently on both cameras
  • Footage stops abruptly and resumes several seconds later (4, 10, or 15 seconds).
  • The issue affects both cameras, not just a single unit.
  • Live streaming works perfectly, with no lag or frame loss.
  • The issue only occurs in cloud-recorded playback

Troubleshooting:

I have conducted extensive troubleshooting to eliminate all common causes:

  • Firmware updated on all devices
  • Tapo app fully updated
  • Verified stable, high-speed fibre internet connection (London city based)
  • Tested isolated network conditions (disconnecting other devices)
  • Adjusted Powerline frequency (Auto / 50Hz / 60Hz)
  • Cameras powered via direct DC connection
  • Frequent camera and router reboots to test
  • Confirmed strong connectivity at camera locations
  • Issue persists across both cameras

Additionally:

I am not using SD cards on these devices (cloud-only setup).

I have other Tapo cameras using SD cards at a different locations, and they do not experience this issue.

My root cause assessment:

Based on all testing and comparisons, I have reached a reasonable conclusion that the issue is likely related to do with the Tapo Care Cloud service, rather than hardware or local network conditions.

I am unable to perform SD card diagnostics on these units due to their installation height (externally mounted high on a wall), which would require hiring assistance or engineer.

Given the consistency of this issue and the volume of similar reports, further local diagnostics should not be necessary to validate the problem.

Please escalate this issue directly to your engineering team for investigation into Tapo Care Cloud recording integrity.

Technical Explanation

I would like a clear explanation of what is causing these recording gaps and whether this is a known issue within your cloud infrastructure.

Resolution Timeline

What is the expected timeline for a fix?

What can i and others do in the mean time?

What's the signal strength of your camera? Please ensure they have a stable connection. How to check and improve the network connection stability of Tapo&Kasa smart devices

I haven’t come across any similar feedback recently, so your issue seems to be an isolated case that will require individual analysis.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I totally agree 100%. I'm experiencing the same issue with two D225 and one C121 using Tapo Cloud. I have 1 Gig Internet super fast with no issues. And I followed the instructions Tapo support advises me, but still the same. I love Tapo 360 video recording. I'm a former Ring and Blink customer. I believe Tapo has a lot of opportunity to beat the competitors in many ways. But that issue needs to be fixed. I will wait for Tapo response to your concerns which were very well explained. Thank you!

  @Wayne-TP

Hi Wayne i am not sure if you have even read the beginning of my message earlier. I have categorically made it clear that this is a common problem with all models of Tapo Cameras including door bells. I know this because people are complaining in this forum.

Look at these links, there are more with the same similar issue. Yes my connection is at full bar, my router sits next to the camera.

Dear @Solla-topee it appears you are the only person who understands this problem and can help me.

I can confirm the following information as requested in another thread:

  1. I have two cameras C560WS with the same issues, they have excellent full bar Wi-Fi strength their RSSI value is at -52 and -56.

  2. I cannot connect with Ethernet cable because the cameras are fitting to the external wall of the house and very high up to reach now as they are already screwed in but my problem is exactly the same as others

  3. No issues when watching live. When downloading the footage on the app i see the same problem when watching it.

My issues are exactly as described above, i believe i require a new firmware. Can this firmware be rolled out to all cameras please?

Thank you @Solla-topee, i look foward to hearing from you soon.

Similar symptoms don’t necessarily mean the underlying cause is the same. Each user’s device, network setup, and environment differ, and any variation in these factors can lead to different outcomes. Just like mobile signals differ between urban and rural areas, or even between a shopping mall and a subway station within the same city, or even between the same phone in different locations, the specifics matter.

I understand you’ve seen several posts describing similar issues, and it might feel like a known problem with a ready‑made solution. However, for security cameras, this is a type of anomaly that may arise on every device from any brand, it’s not something that can always be completely avoided. It's as if you search for unstable Wi-Fi issues on the router, you will find a bunch of them.

As this isn’t an issue with a single universal fix, a suitable solution will only be available after a dedicated investigation. To my knowledge, there is no known issue matching your device’s situation, so I’d recommend reaching out to our support team for a targeted investigation and follow‑up. If you haven't contacted them, i'm happy to create a support ticket for you, just let me know.

  @Wayne-TP

Hi Wayne, I will formally respond to you above when I am able to.

In the mean time I'd be grateful if you can raise a ticket. These cameras were purchased in the last 5 months.

Upon installation they were working just fine without issue in the first few months.

They have had firmware updates, since then this problem has been happening on both my cameras.

Thank you
