Hi,

I have Sky Full Fibre 500 and a Sky Max Hub.

I also have a Deco mesh PX50 network which is connected to the Sky Hub - and working in Access Point mode.

I want to switch to using the Deco PX50 as the only Router and not use the Sky Hub at all - to avoid two different Wifi networks.

I know I could potentially still continue to use the Sky Hub as the router and disable its Wifi - but that is then just using am extra power socket, ethernet cable etc unnecessarily. I would much rather use the Deco as my router.

I read the following article but it seems to suggest that I cannot use the Deco as the Primary router - connected directly to my ONT. I still have to involve the Sky Router as part of the setup.

https://www.tp-link.com/uk/support/faq/3900/

Is there no way of disconnecting the Sky router and only using the Deco as my only router?

Thanks!

Hi,
If your Sky Hub is connected to your ISP via an Ethernet cable rather than a fiber or phone line, you can try using the Deco instead of the Sky Hub. You can factory reset the Deco and refer to the following instructions to set up your Deco.
How to Set Up Your Deco

Before configuration, please contact your ISP to confirm the internet configuration details, such as internet connection type (e.g., Dynamic or PPPoE), whether a username, password, and VLAN ID are required, etc.

Best Regards

  @Solla-topee Thanks for the reply.

But the whole point of my question that I am using Fibre and  I dont want to use the Sky Router at all - I want to use the Deco connected directly to the Fiber ONT INSTEAD of the Sky Router.

My research suggests that the following config on a X50-DSL or X73-DSL would allow me to replace the Sky Router with a Deco:

In the app under the DSL configuration, you can explicitly select Dynamic IP, toggle VLAN ID to 101, and you are provided with text boxes to enter your MER Username and Password (Sky's generic credentials like anything@skydsl|password). The Deco then packages this into the required Option 61 format.

Can the above not be done on a PX50?

Thanks.

Hey Harry, I'm pretty sure that if you have Sky FTTP and an ONT (not FTTC broadband using a phone line) then you will need a router that supports either:

DHCPv6 PD authentication (no login required)

Or DHCP v4 Option61

And use a log-in string:

login: anything@skydsl

Pwd: anything

There is a help page here on setting up DHCP on IPV6 on the internet port here: https://www.tp-link.com/uk/support/faq/2642/

However, I don't think Deco supports Option61 on DHCP v4 so the only way it would work would be using IPV6 DHCP settings.

Also remember, if you have any Sky Voice telephone services they won't work without the Sky router.

  @Adam-ITComms

Thanks for the reply.

I did ask Gemini Pro a similar question yesterday and it advised me to contact Sky and ask

"Does my local Openreach handover exchange natively support authentication via native DHCPv6 Prefix Delegation (PD) to provision both IPv6 and an IPv4 address? Or is this specific routing area still restricted to legacy IPv4 DHCP Option 61 (MER) authentication for third-party client equipment?'

and it if is DHCPv6-PD - as you say, then I should be able to use my Deco PX50 or X50 as the router.

I dont suppose you know if there is a way I can check on my Sky HUb Admin login UI to see which of the above applies?

And thankfully I am not much fussed about telephony - haven't even plugged in a phone siince the Sky service was activated several months ago.

Cheers.

Hi,
If your Sky Hub is connected to the ONT via an Ethernet cable, you can try using the Deco PX50 to replace it. However, we don't have the configuration information (e.g., Dynamic or PPPoE, username, password, VLAN ID), so you'll need to contact your ISP to confirm.

Or if you have a computer and it has internet when directly connected to the ONT through an Ethernet cable, the internet connection type should be Dynamic IP. Then you can try to configure the Deco via the Deco app.

If your Sky Hub is connected to the ONT via phone line or fiber, the Deco PX50 can't replace it.
