Model: Deco S4
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version:

Hi,

I bought the TP-Link Deco S4 AC1200 (3 pack) thinking that it would extended the wifi as we have blackspots in the house.

The set up:

BT Hub connecting by cat5 to Deco Hub 1 (same room).  Then the other hubs are wireless connections to Deco Hub 1.

Deco Hub 2 is in the hallway in the next room and Deco Hub 3 is upstairs at the far corner of the house (dormer bungalow, standard sized house just for info ie no stone walls etc.  But our house is in a dip so we rely on wifi for mobile wifi calling)

Wifi when connecting to BT Hub is around 500

Wifi when connecting to Deco Hub 1 is around 300

Deco Hub 2 is around 150

Deco Hub 3 is a measley 50

I ass-u-me-d that it would extended the signal, as in keep it boosted up.  Whereas it is actually only marginally better than just having the BT Hub.

I'm assuming it's user error and I have set it up incorrectly, but I can't find any way to change this.

Or have I bought the wrong product?

Or is it doing what it should and we just have to accept that Deco Hub 3 will always be so low?

Deco Hub 3 is what our external cameras conntect to, so ideally I need a really good speed...

All Deco hubs are out in full view - bothing hidden in a cupboard, as I'm trying to get the best speed possible.

Thanks for reading

Hi,
1. Satellite Deco units are not primarily designed to improve internet speed; they are designed to extend Wi-Fi coverage throughout your home or office. For example, there are black spots in the house when using only a Wi-Fi router. With the Deco nodes, one Deco can act as the Wi-Fi router, the satellite Deco can be placed between the main Deco and the blackspots, extend Wi-Fi signal to the blackspots, so that the devices in the blackspots can connect to the Deco's Wi-Fi to go to the internet.

Due to factors such as environmental interference, physical obstructions, and distance—combined with the fact that a satellite Deco must communicate simultaneously with both the main Deco and client devices—it is normal for the download speed to a satellite Deco to be slower than that to the main Deco.

In your situation, if you want the Deco Hub 3 to achieve better speed, you can connect it to the main Deco or the Deco Hub 2 via an ethernet cable.

2. I can't tell if the Deco has the speed it should have based on the provided info, since it is related to multiple factors. If you'd like to perform further troubleshooting, please confirm the following information.
  1) On the Deco app > Network tab, please click on a Deco, then tap Show Map and Show List to see if the Deco Hub 3 is connected to the main Deco or the Deco Hub 2.
  2) Please connect a laptop to your BT Hub with an ethernet cable. What's the download speed on your laptop? Please visit www.speedtest.net to test your download speed.
  3) When connecting the laptop to the Deco Hub 1 by an ethernet cable, what's the download speed?
  4) Turn off the Deco Hub 2, place the laptop at the same location as the Deco Hub 2, connect it to the main Deco's Wi-Fi, what's the link speed and download speed?
  5) Turn off the Deco Hub 2 & 3, place the laptop at the same location as the Deco Hub 3, connect it to the main Deco's Wi-Fi, what's the link speed and download speed?

Best Regards
