Hi, i recently bought a Powerline WPA8630 Kit so i could enhance my Ethernet / wifi coverage with more speed capacity (I already have WPA4220 Kit AV500). 

 

Configuration steps I did:

 

  1. Unplugged the WPA4220 Kit.
  2. Plugged and paired the adapter and extender of WPA8630 Kit on the same room where is the router (Askey TCG220-xG dual band 2.4GHz and 5GHz)
  3. Custom the wireless settings for 2.4GHz and 5GHz:
    • 2.4 GHz:
      • Security: WPA/WPA2-Personal
      • Version: WPA2/PSK
      • Encryption: AES
      • Mode: 802.11b/g/n mixed
      • Channel width: 40MHz
      • Channel: 3 (I choose this one after I moved to the room I need be plugged. I used wi analyzer to check the best channel)
      • Transmit power: high
    • 5GHz:
      • Security: WPA/WPA2-Personal
      • Version: WPA2/PSK
      • Encryption: AES
      • Mode: 802.11a/n/ac mixed
      • Channel width: 80MHz
      • Channel: 149 (I choose this one after I moved to the room I need be plugged. I used wi analyzer to check the best channel)
      • Transmit power: high
  4. Then I test the internet speed with speedtest.net as below (contracted speed is 200Mbps):
    • Laptop - router: Laptop's Ethernet link speed 1,0 Gbps
      • 1st test: 189.60 / 33.37
      • 2nd test: 187.56 / 33.23
      • 3rd test: 209.19 / 33.22
    • Laptop - extender - adapter - router: using same laptop connected by cable CAT5E
      • 1st test: 87.18 / 33.18
      • 2nd test: 92.28 / 33.19
      • 3rd test: 96.35 / 33.58
    • Laptop - extender - adapter - router: using same laptop connected by wifi on 2.4GHz (DTP) band, and link speed of 150 Mbps
      • 1st test: 75.20 / 33.63
      • 2nd test: 83.43 / 33.29
      • 3rd test: 86.49 / 34.13
    • Laptop - extender - adapter - router: using same laptop connected by wifi on 5GHz (DTP5G) band, and link speed of 433,3 Mbps
      • 1st test: 90.17 / 33.23
      • 2nd test: 92.25 / 33.56
      • 3rd test: 88.28 / 33.50

 

Notes:

  • The speed test was almost the same that I got on the room where is the router and the room where I needed to be plugged.
  • Was plugged away from electrical appliances such as washing machine or stereos.
  • Just was connected the laptop for each test and no any other device.
  • The distance between rooms was 30mts.
  • Despite having that speed degradation, after made the tests I also tried connecting the WPA4220 extender, and when testing the speeds over Ethernet and Wifi it registered an average of 80 / 31 Mbps which was fine.

 

My questions are:

 

  1. Which are the highest speeds (in the best conditions) that I should get by been connected to the extender by Ethernet, 2.4GHz and 5GHz? (Theoretically should be 1000Mbps, 300Mbps and 867Mbps respectively)
  2. Why despite of having 1Gbps of Ethernet interface, I only got 96 Mbps as the highest speed transfer connected by extender?
  3. Having the speed degradation is the reason of why I got almost the same speed by Ethernet, 2.4Ghz and 5GHz?

 

I bought this powerline kit cause I want to get the closest speed to the 200 Mbps (got by contract) on other room with almost none degradation without the necessity of use wifi repeaters. Its greatest strength is supposed to be the ethernet connection using the electrical circuit, avoiding packet loss that occurs with wifi connection.

Good day,

Thank you very much for your detailed information.

I think the reason would be the Ethernet speed and it is capped to 100m/s, then the wireless speed was affected by the Ethernet speed as well.

Could you please help me check the following information

  1. Currently, there is only TL-WPA8630kit in the system, no 4220kit anymore, right
  2. Could you please help me check the powerline rate between the adapters on the utility:

Update, now I see the powerline rate on the files, it is around 330m/s.

And normally, the final internet speed would be 40% of the powerline rate, around 132m/s.

So it turned out the powerline rate limited the final download speed.

So have you checked the powerline rate when they are in the same room?

Please also move the extender to a different socket, or another room far away from the household appliances.

And make sure the firmware is up to date and please also try to enable the VDSL mode to have a look:

Hi, thank you for reply. Answering your question "So have you checked the powerline rate when they are in the same room?", is yes, and I already told you that on "Notes" section, and also was plugged far away from the household appliances. But just for been clear, I' have done it again and attached another file with the evidence that shows almost the same measure as 11-19.

 

When you said "the final internet speed would be 40% of the powerline rate", you mean that spite of having 1000Mbps by Ethernet, the maximun speed that I could get would be 400Mbps? And if that is true, the maximun speed that I could get on 2.4GHz would be 300Mbps and 400Mbps on 5GHz ?

 

Finally, could you please answer the pending questions please?

Thank you very much for your kind reply.

Supposing you could get 1G/s from the router,

For the TL-WPA8630kit, it is AV1300,  If only considering the powerline loss(40% loss), the maximum Ethernet speed would be 1300*40%=520 m/s;

5ghz would be 80-90% of the Ethernet, around 416-468 m/s;

2.4ghz would be 60-80% of the Ethernet, around 312-416 m/s;

 

Then taking the negotiation speed into consideration(1000Mbps for Ethernet, 300Mbps for 2.4ghz, and 867Mbps for 5ghz), Ethernet would still be 520m/s, 2.4ghz would reduce to 300m/s, 5ghz would be 416-468 m/s;                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  

---so the final download speed would be decided by the negotiation speed, power-line rate as well as the internet bandwidth provided by the service provider. And it would be the smallest among them.

 

For your case, the internet bandwidth of the service provider and negotiation speed had no problem and the powerline rate was the reason for slow speed.

Since Even though they are in the same room, there is still around 502m/s( only 38% out of AV1300), which would limit the final download speed to 200m/s;

 

As for the powerline rate, it is closely related to the powerline interference on the electric wires, like surge protector, UPS, high power household appliances;

Good afternoon and thank you for your reply. Still you haven't answer why I can only get 96 Mbps as the highest speed transfer connected by extender inspite of knowing that the speed including the powerline loss is 520 Mbps by Ethernet? I already told you that the tests were in the same room where is the router, and there is no any surge protector, UPS or high power household appliances that could make interference on the electric wires, then why I'm getting that speed? There is no way that could be reasobable get less than 5th part of speed of what is meant to trasfer has to be consider good.


So this powerline is malfunctioning because it does not give the minimally acceptable speed within the range it should (just the 5th part of it), as I said before, I already have the WPA4220 working great getting around 80 Mbps with Ethernet port, and what I was expecting when buying this one was to get more speed with the Ethernet gigabit port like 150 Mbps - 190 Mbps instead of just get 10 Mbps more. Would you suggest to return and change this one or get a refund because every WPA8630 has this issue? Just be honest on the answer please.

Currently, after checking with the engineers, the primary cause of the slow speed is the slow powerline rate.

We would like to forward your case to them directly for a final check to see if there are any other suggestions that could improve the power-line rate.

Good day, I've been waiting for the reply / message from your engineers team but I haven't receive any until now, so could you please tell me if you would suggest me to return and change this one or get a refund because every WPA8630 has this limitation?
