Bug in the new firmware Archer C7 (1.0.16 Build 20201030 rel.55736)
Hi all!
After updating the Archer C7 firmware, I noticed that after one device changes to 2.4GHz wifi, it does not return to 5GHz wifi, even if it is positioned near to the router. I'm using Smart Connect configuration.
Model: Archer C7
Hardware Version: V5
Firmware Version: 1.0.11 Build 20190726 rel.57101(5553)
Does anyone also noticed it?

BTW, do you mean this is not happened on the older 1.0.11 Build 20190726 rel.57101(5553) version?
Generally, the router will determine which band is best for the device to use when Smart Connect is enabled, while we don't think this is actually a bug. There are differing implementations of Smart Connect, some do 'load leveling', that is all radios (dual-band or Tri-band radio's depending on router as well as the guest radio's) will get an even number of devices connected. Some just determine the best radio for the device and will connect to that leaving some radio's having more devices connected than others. Some implementations will also dynamically level the number of devices connected to the radios. If you find your devices are connected to the 2.4GHz instead of 5GHz when Smart Connect is enabled, you are suggested to disable it and connect to the 5GHz manually.

I would need rollback to previous version to give you a confident answer. But I remember that every time I checked the connected clients, it was common find the newer devices connected to the 5GHz wifi, even when they were away from the router. Now, the 5GHz is always free. If I restart the wifi connection of one device, and it is near to the router, it connects using 5GHz, but after some time it changes to 2.4GHz and never returns to 5GHz.

I returned my router to the previous version (1.0.15 Build 20200628 rel.63501(5553)) and now the devices are switching between the two frequencies. For instance, in this version (the oldest one), my Chromecast (which is located near to the router) always connects on 5Ghz, while in the latest version it just connected on 2.4Ghz.

I see. Does this issue only happen on the Chromecast? How about other devices that also support both 2.4GHz and 5GHz, are they switching between the two on the latest 1.0.16 Build 20201030 rel.55736 version?
BTW, can we have the exact model and version of the Chromecast (and other devices)? We may need to confirm this issue, and investigate if this needs to be optimized, thanks a lot.

if you have smart connect turned off, does that mean that you can connect to 2.4ghz or the 5ghz manually? the reason I ask is because that's how I have my router setup on top of that both radios on. However, after I updated from 1.0.15, I was able to connect some devices to 2.4ghz and some to 5ghz as not all my devices support the 5ghz network.
However, new problem. I can't see both networks anymore (from any device). If I have 5ghz and 2.4ghz bands on, none of my devices are seeing the 2.4ghz so every old device is no longer connected to router. Security, bands, everything set to auto. Also i have smart connect turned off.

If you cannot find the 2.4GHz network anymore on some old devices, please login to the web interface of the router, try to modify the wireless settings, such as change the wireless channel to 1/6/11, change the channel width to 20MHz, security to WPA2-PSK/AES, then reboot the router and those devices, try to connect again.
