When I try to connect the extender it asks me to log into the extender This is new and I don't understand what login details it wants it does not take my TP-LINK ID

It is possible that  device has not bound to TPLINK ID yet, at that time device uses local username and password, not the TPLINK ID account .
It is recommended to factory reset the RE and later when login RE, and Tether app will let you create new login password (or some models uses default username and password which are both ’admin’ in lower case  ) 
reset: with RE powered on, use a pin to keep pushing the reset hole until all the Leds flash once
