Model: Deco X60
Hardware Version: V2
Firmware Version: 1.5.1

Hi,

As per my understanding the Deco x60 has 4 streams on 5 Ghz and should support a theoretical maximum bandwidth of 2402 mbps on 4x4 MU-MIMO, so I performed an iPerf3 test to confirm this, and based on my results, it looks like its only using 2 streams (maximum 1201 mbps).

Test Setup (iperf3 was used):

2 Deco x60 in access point mode (connected via 1gbps ethernet cable)

1 2020 M1 Macbook Air (connected to 5ghz 802.11ax 1200 link rate) as iperf server

1 2020 iPad Air (connected to 5ghz 802.11ax, link rate should likely be 1200 as well) as iperf client

Test 1:
M1 Macbook Air connected to Deco x60-1

iPad Air connected to Deco x60-1

iPerf3 test results:

Average Transfer Rate: ~350mbps

Peak Transfer Rate: ~420mbps

Test 2:

M1 Macbook Air connected to Deco x60-1

iPad Air connected to Deco x60-2

iPerf3 test results:

Average Transfer Rate: ~650mbps

Peak Transfer Rate: ~800mbps

Both of these devices are 2x2 MU-MIMO while the Deco x60 is 4x4 MU-MIMO so I expected there to be no difference between tests if MU-MIMO was working as expected (both devices would get 2 streams each with link rate of 1200mbps). This means that Test 1 should have had the same results as Test 2, but it looks like they shared bandwidth instead (almost exactly half) instead of getting 2 streams each, seems like they shared 2 streams instead of dividing 4 streams. Can anyone from TP_Link confirm this?

Thanks.

Final update:

support.forum@tp-link.com has replied to my inquiry by stating that "MU-MIMO works it just cant be measured..." (?)

Whether this answer is acceptable, you be the judge. In my case I am disappointed as the X60 won't be able to fully take advantage of gigabit internet over Wi-Fi and doesn't seem to have an advantage over the X20 which is significantly cheaper.

@PYellow

Hi, I have checked with the senior engineers and they confirmed Deco X60 is 4*4 MU-MIMO.

And the way you tested MU-MIMO is ok as well.

As for why test2 has higher bandwidth, I will try my best to explain it but I am not sure if I could make my clear.

If not, please feel free to create a ticket to support.forum@tp-link.com and I could forward your case to the senior engineers.

For test2, only one client to each Deco, the other 2 steams is transferred between Deco X60-1 and Deco X60-2 which supported 4*4 for each of them.

So the connection between two Deco units has improved the whole bandwidth.

Thank you very much.

@TP-Link

Thanks for the reply.

So Test 2 actually looks a bit more like this, and the ~800 mbps speed I got was the expected result:

For Test 1, I expected this to happen to get ~800mbps also (because Deco x60 is 4x4 MU-MIMO):

But based on the ~400mbps speed results of Test 1, it looks like what is actually happening is this:

P.S. I've emailed the support.forum@tp-link.com as well if it would be easier for the senior engineers to help support through there. Thanks again.

Update for anyone interested in this issue:

The issue I had has not been resolved yet and it seems that the Deco X60 is capping off for me at 1200 mbps shared bandwidth across multiple devices (instead of the advertised 2400mbps).

This leads me to believe that the X60 either does not support the full 2400mbps advertised or does not properly support MU-MIMO, hopefully someone from TP-Link can chime in on this.
