Hello,

 

I try to design the wifi mesh network. There are two buildings. Building "A" (house) with thick walls and Building "B" (guest house). The distance between buildings is about 60m. I'd like to make one mesh network for both buildings. My idea is to use Deco PX50 system to eliminate the effect of thick walls within one building. That means, one group (let's call devices A1, A2, A3) for building A, and the second group (B1, B2, B3) for building B.

Now, I want to connect both groups together in one mesh network. WiFi connection between groups will be too bad, connection over power line also too bad. But I can lay an ethernet cable between two buildings. So, I need to know if it is possible to route mesh traffic over this ethernet cable.

The reason why I want one network is the following: I think there will be a weak WiFi connection from one building to another. Without one united mesh network, the phone can stuck in the network with a weak signal.

 

And some additional questions to this project:

Can I connect more than 3 Deco devices into the same mesh network? Let's say 10.

Can I make a mesh network as a chain from Deco devices (if there is no connection over the power line)?

Can I make a guest network within a given mesh network?

Can I limit traffic for the guest network? If not, then can I set a higher QoS priority for the main network in relation to guest network (for the whole network, not for individual devices)?

In the description I found, it is stated that the system of 3 DECO devices can handle up to 150 clients (with a star). Does that mean 50 clients per device? If I need to service more devices at one location, shall I just add one more deco device in the near?

Hi, welcome to the community.

There is some information for your reference:

  • 10 Mesh units are too many unless they are all wired via Ethernet cables. 5-6 nodes will be better.

How many Deco units can I add to my Deco mesh network?

 

  •  "Make a mesh network as a chain from Deco devices", Do you mean a topology like:

main Deco---<wifi>--satellite #1---<wifi>--- satellite #2---<wifi>---satellite #3---.....more

Normally, no more than 3 hops and satellite Deco nodes choose the uplink signal source automatically, sometimes it is hard to guarantee it must be a chain, maybe a star in certain situations.

 

  • Yes, You could set up a guest network together with the main Mesh network.

As for what features the guest network supported, it is suggested to have a look at this link:

Some models with the latest firmware support setting up traffic limits and duration time of the guest network.

 

 

  • As for the WiFi capacity, 150 is the maximum for the whose mesh system, and is not evenly per device. You might think a mixed 5*pack mesh could handle the same number of clients as a mixed 6-pack.

But I am still in doubt about the main issue. If I connect two deco devices with an ethernet cable, will they form a mesh network? Especially, when they have at the same time very weak connection over WiFi and over power line. Will they use ethernet cable first to communicate with each other?

Sorry if it seems stupid question, but in the description of the product it is stated that deco devices communicate with each other over WiFi or powerline. There is nothing written about ethernet cable.

 

So, the simple case (proof of concept) is topology like <deco1> --- <ethernet cable> --- <deco2>

 

Then the real topology like this: <two decos> --- <wifi and power line> --- <deco> ---  <ethernet cable> --- <deco> --- <wifi and powerline> --- <deco> --- <wifi and powerline> --- <deco>

 

Will it work as one mesh network?
