Model: Deco M5
Hardware Version: V3
Firmware Version: 1.7.1

Good afternoon everyone

I am having a weird issue regarding parental controls on the Deco M5. It has been working flawlessly for the last 2 years.

I set YouTube and YouTube Kids as a blocked website on my kids ipads after they've had a couple of hours (so I can limit how much time they have on it) and I noticed yesterday that even after adding youtube and YouTube Kids to the blocked websites, they were able to still go on YouTube on the apps. Adult sites are still being blocked and blocking Internet access also still works.

I added my Samsung S23 Ultra to the same group and I can also still access YouTube and YouTube Kids, but only on the apps. If trying to access it in a browser, it doesn't allow me on it. However I added BBC to the block list, and it allows me on it on my phone and the Ipads.

However a GoogleTV which I've added to the same profile, can't access youtube or youtube kids on a browser or on the apps. But can still access BBC.

I have updated my M5's to the latest firmware (1.7.1).

Taken Youtube and YouTube Kids off the block list and then readded them.

Rebooted the M5's.

Turned the M5 off that we were all connected to and connected to the same one the GoogleTV is connected to.

Recreated the profiles and re-added the Ipads to them.

Taken "Private WiFi address" off in network settings.

Rebooted the Ipads.

All with the same results.

TLDR; Youtube and YouTube Kids are blocked when trying access on Safari / Chrome. But are accessable on the apps. BBC is accessable on Safari / Chrome even though its on the block list.

Anyone got any suggestions as I am now at a loss.

  @Jdmar

Update:

For the issue mentioned here-HomeCare Parental Control & QoS Suddenly Stopped Working, the official firmware has been released for several models to fix this problem.

The similar firmware will gradually roll out on other models later.

Deco M5_V1/V2/V3 1.7.3 Build 20230906
Deco X20_V2/V2.6 1.2.3 Build 20230906
Deco X25_V2/V2.6 1.2.3 Build 20230906
Deco W3600_V2.6 1.2.3 Build 20230906

Thank you very much and best regards.

  Hi @David-TP

I already had that turned off. I tried BBC before I did this and it was blocked.

I have turned IPV6 on and off again then reconnected my phone and I am still able to get on YouTube + YouTube Kids on the apps. But not the Web browser.

Kind regards

Jamie

  @Jdmar

Thanks for the update.

Have you also tried to add other relevant domains for youtube, such as the addresses listed below to see whether they helped for blocking youtube:

Wait for your reply.

  @David-TP

I did not no, I just added the pre-existing "YouTube" and "YouTube Kids" one that were on there when adding a new website;

I have since added all the ones that you linked (youtube.com

youtubei.googleapis.com

youtube-ui.google.com

m.youtube.com)

And the apps are still allowing access but not on the browser.

Kind regards

Jamie

I also have Deco M5....

Parental controls had been working just fine until I updated to the latest firmware version 1.7.1 .... nothing is blocked no more.  I could even use kid's device to search and go to pornhub...  it was working flawlessly until this firmware update.

Please help~~

  @Kbiz85 I have an M5 and am having the same issue. Despite a block, YouTube is working fine for my kids and my oldest daughter has discovered freetubespot where she can watch any new movie unrestricted. I need this blocked, I can do so on her phone that I have parental controls on, but the school iPad I can't control... infuriating. It sounds like this is an issue with the newest update? If so, I wanted to join the thread for information on any resolutions. If this doesn't get fixed soon, I'll need recommendations for another mesh network that offers website blocking that works.

  @Dkenagy

@Kbiz85

@PinoC

Thank you very much for the feedback. The issue about Parental control is not related to the latest firmware since I saw similar feedback elsewhere on the different models.

The issue has been reported to the engineers and they are working on it.

Once the solution is ready, we will update here on the community as soon as possible.

Thank you again and best regards.

Thanks @David-TP for replying~~~  I was wondering if we are looking at days, weeks, or months for the fix?  I am not asking you guys to commit on the date for the fix.  But, just like to know a rough estimate.  So, we will manually or physically monitor our children somewhat for the time being.  Please advice, thanks~~~
