Model: TL-WA850RE
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 3.15.8 Build 150127 Rel.39463n

Hello,

I've two quite old TP-Link Range Extenders TL-WA850RE (v1.20 and v1.24).

1) I'd like to know if these extenders support AP mode?
I thought they do because of the embedded ethernet port, but can't find the necessary setting in the respective configuration pages.

2) Also, when I try to update to the latest available firmware version (TL-WA850RE(EU)_V1.20_150731), device always end-up coming with the previous installed version (3.15.8 Build 150127 Rel.39463n). What could be wrong?

3) One last question...
I connect to the extender own WiFi network trying to reach the management page via www.tplinkrepeater.net, but always get a page with:

   "Trying to Configure the Range Extender?

   It looks like you may have run into an issue"
The only way I found was connecting directly to extender IP address, (which was quite difficult as the router IP list with connect devices, doesn't seem always update...).
What can be wrong? Isn't this address (www.tplinkrepeater.net) compatible with older devices versions?

Thanks and best regards.

Fernando

  @Conchas

TL-WA850RE v1.20 seems to support only Range Extender mode - look at page 2 of its user guide - here.

Looking at the support page the latest FW release for v1.20 is 3.15.8 Build 150127 - here.

"www.tplinkrepeater.net" domain has been introduced in the previous FW version - TL-WA850RE(EU)_V1.20_140826

If this doesn't work for you, set a Static IP for the RE (for example 192.168.0.254) for easier access.

@terziyski

Thank you for the quick reply!

Regarding the firmware version, it seems I was mislead by the info the Portuguese version of the same page - see here.

At least the information is not consistent! Although the fact is that I downloaded TL-WA850RE(EU)_V1.20_150731, but it does not upload.

Thanks,

Fernando

I can see that this is a specific FW release " Idioma: português ". Do you receive any error message during manual upgrade ? You have to unzip the file first before uploading.

Using the Global English release TL-WA850RE_V1.20_150127 is enough to have an up-to-date FW on your router.

@terziyski

I know, I unziped the file and used always the .bin file for uploading.
I was just reporting it. I'm fine with build 150127.

Hi,

The reason why you are not seeing a difference after uploading either of the two *.bin files is, well, there is no difference between the two files!

But don't ask me why their file names contain different date codes. Only TP-Link would know.
