Firmware Version: 1.03 build 20240118 Rel. 70837

I'm facing some frustrating problems getting good 4G/5G performance out of my Deco BE65-5G when using external antennas.

Background:

  • I previously had a Huawei 4G router with an external panel antenna (698Mhz-960Mhz & 1710Mhz-2700Mhz) which provided decent 4G access and satisfactory download/upload speeds.
  • I've now replaced this with the Deco BE65-5G in router mode, using the same panel antenna, same cables of 10 meters, and same antenna direction and location.

Problems:

  • External Antennas setting in the Deco app ON: I either only get a 3G connection or no connection at all (if I force 4G).
  • External Antennas OFF: I get a 5G connection, but with high latency (RSRP -103dBm, RSRQ -14dB, SNR 3.4dB).

Troubleshooting Steps Taken:

  • I've tried a new external antenna (Dawn Communication 2x2 MIMO 5G/4G) with a pair of directional yagi antennas (698Mhz-4000Mhz).
  • I used compass to set the direction to the most reasonable cell tower.
  • I've also tried new 5 meter low-loss cables with both the old and new antennas.

  • I've relocated the gateway to a better indoor location, which slightly improved performance with external antennas off (RSRP -97dBm, RSRQ -10dB, SNR 0.2dB).
  • With Deco app, the speed test shows 170 Mbps down and 10 Mbps up when continuing to have the settings of external antennas off.

  • I've restarted the Deco BE65-5G multiple times and waited 5-10 minutes before testing.

Additional Information:

  • Deco BE65-5G is in router mode.
  • Deco app version 3.8.23.
  • Close by cells N28 and B20

Questions:

  • Has anyone else experienced similar issues with external antennas on the Deco BE65-5G?
  • Any suggestions on specific settings or configurations I should check?
  • Could there be compatibility issues between the Deco BE65-5G and certain types of external antennas?
  • Are there any known firmware issues that might be causing this problem?
  • Any other troubleshooting steps I should try?

I'm really eager to get the external antennas working properly so I can take full advantage of the Deco BE65-5G's capabilities. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

  @Papsiboy

Hi, welcome to the community.

May I know who your SIM carrier is?

Have you tried to put the SIM card into the mobile phone to check the available 5G signal strength(using the cell signal checking APPs like Network Cell Info Lite & Wifi)?

---How about the 5G speed on the mobile phone?

Thank you very much and wait for your reply.

Hi there, thanks @David-TP for the welcome!

Hopefully @David-TP, this post gives some answers to your questions!

Connectivity Challenges and Testing Results

I'm using Telia as my carrier in Finland and have been testing their 5G SIM card in both my Deco router and my iPhone. I've noticed that the Speedtest results on my iPhone fluctuate depending on my location within the house or garden. Interestingly, the Deco, even relying solely on its internal antennas and positioned optimally indoors, consistently outperforms my iPhone's 5G connection. I'm confident I'm within Telia's 5G coverage area, as confirmed by their website and the Deco app itself.

Insights from iPhone and Deco

Since iPhone doesn't directly display cell signal information, I utilized the Field Test Mode to gather some data (screenshot attached). This test was conducted indoors, where the 5G signal is weaker. I've also included screenshots from the Deco app (using QUENG and QCAINFO at commands), showcasing the status with 5G selected as the primary network and when it's restricted to 4G only. Forcing the Deco into 4G-only mode didn't significantly impact speed or ping; the results were comparable to 5G mode, although there were noticeable upload speed improvements with 5G. As mentioned previously, attempts to use external antennas resulted in the connection failing to detect any 4G or 5G access.

Antenna Setup and Previous Configuration

Following Telia's advice, I've kept the panel antenna oriented in the same direction as it was when I used a 4G SIM card in my previous setup. The results and testing are described in detail in my previous post. I know the exact location of the relevant cell tower and other nearby ones. While the Cellmapper app provides some information about cell tower locations, network and bands, it's crowd-sourced and may not be entirely accurate. This has helped me a bit to find more data from the signals.  Bands LTE B20 and NRG5 N28 seems to be the right ones when using Deco's internal antennas. I'm optimistic that the new directional yagi antennas will significantly improve the connection. As mentioned in my original post, I've already tested these new antennas with two different sets of coaxial antenna cables, pointing them towards various cell towers.

Performance Impact of External Antennas

I reviewed my Speedtest history from a few months ago when I was using the previous setup with Huawei modem, 4G access and external panel antenna.. The connection was better particularly in terms of upload ping and speed. With the external antennas and Huawei modem, the upload ping (Speedtest-app measurement) was consistently about 10 times lower than what I'm currently experiencing with the Deco and no external antennas. External antennas are known to enhance upload speeds, which is crucial for me since I need reliable uploads for activities like Teams meetings. The current inability to utilize external antennas with the Deco is significantly impacting upload quality, which is my primary concern.

Conclusion

In summary, both 4G and 5G performance at my location is suboptimal without external antennas. Observing my neighbors' rooftops, I believe they might be encountering similar connectivity issues. My previous setup with the Huawei modem,4G, and external antennas delivered satisfactory results. The Deco's current limitation of not supporting external antennas is a major drawback.

  • I'm hoping @David-TP you or someone in the community who has encountered a similar issue can offer advice on how to get the external antennas working with the Deco BE65-5G.
  • If there are any specific settings or configurations I should check, please let me know.

thanks Papsiboy

@Papsiboy Hi, Thanks for the update.

Currently, I don't have any other suggestions so would like to escalate your case to the senior engineer directly via email.

In the meantime, I knew you had conducted several speed tests and ping tests on both the Deco BE65-5G and Huawei 4G modem. Would you be able to update the email with the test screenshots or files that could be shared with the engineers to help them gain a clearer insight into the current issue?

Thank you again and best regards.

Either this Deco BE65-5G device has also been made to work with external antennas or is this work still pending from product support engineers?
