Hello folks.

I have a really odd situation, made only worse by the fact I am no tech guy so I have no clue what to do.

I recently bought a Xiaomi Mi tv stick 4k in order to turn an old TV into a smart TV.

It's parameters are Wi-Fi 2,4GHz/5GHz, 2gb ram, Android TV 11 as OS.

Now I have two routers. One is the main router hooked up to my modem and PC. That is an Archer C6U dual band1200 Mbps. To it I have hooked by cable a second old router as an access point. It's so old I can't be sure of the actual model, but by looking it up I assume it's a TL-WR740N. One of those old, white ones with just 1 antenna.

I've actually had them hooked up like this for over a year. The access point I made as online videos and instructions from forums here said I should do (change LAN IP, disable DHCP server, etc.) and it worked OK. Phones and laptops have been connecting to the AP router without a problem for months. Then I tried to hook the new TV stick to it (the AP router) the other day and the weirdness began.

The Mi TV stick connects, has Wi Fi for anywhere between 2 mins to 30 sec and loses it. If I go and restart the router via the power button it finds it again and the occurrence repeats. Oddly enough when the TV stick loses the internet, seemingly, all of the other devices hooked to the AP router, like my phone, lose the WiFi as well.

The main router and the PC at the other side of the house are fine tho.

I thought maybe the stick is busted but if I hotspot it with my phone's own cell data, no problems. I tried hooking it to the main router, but that thing is so far away the signal is incredibly weak. You can't be sure if the tv stick is loosing the Wi Fi due to the problem or the 3 brick walls between it and the Archer C6U.

I tried some weird things yesterday like trying to reserve the stick's IP, making it have a static IP (idk if I did it properly). Reset both routers to factory settings and configure the master and secondary router as an access points with various LAN IPs for the AP router (I probably factory reset configured the thing 7 times with every suggestion I could find in every forum or YT video comment section I could find). Nothing. I factory reset the TV stick, again nothing. Checked for updates on the Android OS, downloaded them, again, nothing.

1-2 minutes of wifi and then gone. But if I don't actually use the TV stick, if it's just plugged in the TV, the AP router seems to work normally.

So... any ideas?

Thanks in advance for the help.

 Hi @Joseph-TP ,

Thanks for the reply.

So I tested the speeds with the online speed tests. Generally my internet and WiFi next to the main router are 95-97 Mbps. For the AP router they are 40.51 Mbps right next to the router. And next to the TV stick (which is in an adjacent room) 35.71 Mbps. I can't move the AP ant closer to the stick. I tried a wireles bridge so that I don't depend on the cable and put the AP router right next to the stick, but that gutted the speed down to 17 Mbps.

As for other devices on the network there actually aren't any. There is the ocasional phnone, but all the people in the house have unlimited cell data, so actually the WiFi is rarely used. The main consumer of internet is likely my gaming PC, but that is on the other side of the house and actually not hooked to the WiFi but rather the modem via the Archer main router.

I could consider a better router as an AP. The main reason I'm using the TL-WR740N is I just had it. Leftover from previous years. And it did a decent enough job as an AP before everyone had unlimited cell data.

Something I noticed yesterday, as I continued trying various suggestions from youtube, reddit, you name it, was that when looking at the WiFi icon in the Mi stick UI it seemed to always go "acquiring IP address" followed by "connected" and then "saved". And then again it would go by itself "acquiring IP address".

Actually for a spell, after changing the security on the Archer from  WPA/WPA2 Personal to WPA2/WPA3 Personal and changing the channel on the TL-WR740N from Auto to 1 and the channel width from auto to 20Mhz the stick managed to play a whole 8-10 min video on YT without freezing and losing the WiFi. But I think thast might have been luck as when I tried to recreate the situation it did not repeat.

I can generally just hotspot it. As when I used my phone cell date there was no problem. This struggle is more or less now me trying to justify the existence of the access point router.

Anyway thanks for the advice, if you have any other suggestions I'll gladly hear them.

OK, a quick final update on this. Joseph, you were right, the TL-WR740N was the problem. I read that the Mi Stick 4K apparently doesn't work well with the 2.4 ghz frequency (despite the box claiming it should work with both 2.4 and 5 ghz). So I hooked the Archer as a solo router, away from my modem, at the point where the TL-WR740N was and acted as the AP. Now the Mi Stick seemingly functions without interruptions. So now I just have to decide what to do for the future setup. Perhaps I will just buy a second archer to act as an AP and do away with the TL-WR740N. Thanks for the help.

 Hi @ManyoRakov

Could I know what the current wireless speed of TL-WR740N is?  Which is to know whether the network speed of TL-WR740N meets the usage requirements of Xiaomi Mi tv stick 4k?

In addition, how many client devices need to use the TL-WR740N network? What are the devices? If the problem occurs once Xiaomi Mi tv stick 4k joins the network, it may be because Xiaomi Mi tv stick 4k interferes with other devices or occupies a large amount of traffic, causing interference to other client devices.

If there is a router with higher performance, it may be able to improve the problem. In other words, you can consider adding a router with performance close to Archer C6U as an Access point.

Or, if you want to keep your current network settings, you can also consider powerline devices with WiFi capabilities.

However, there are environmental requirements for using powerline devices, that is, you need to ensure that the circuits of the powerline adapter and powerline extender are in the same circuit environment, so that both devices can communicate with each other through powerline in the same circuit.

For more details about powerline, please refer to:

What is Powerline?

Hi  @ManyoRakov

Thanks for your troubleshooting and the conclusion: It seems that the problem is most likely due to the fact that Mi Stick 4K apparently doesn't work well with the 2.4 ghz frequency.

So I still recommend you to add a high-performance router, especially one with 5Ghz band. Or, as I said before, add a powerline device.

Of course, you still need to try what device is more suitable for you to get the best result.

If you have any questions or updates, feel free to contact us.
