wireless 5ghz makes ticking sound when enabled

Have been using a TP-Link AC1200 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit ADSL2+ Modem Router - ARCHER D5 for some months now. All was good until today when it started making a constant ticking noise. I rebooted and then disconnected all wires into the modem but the ticking continued. Eventually I went to the settings page and disabled the 2ghz wireless - no change. But the ticking stopped when i disabled the 5ghz wireless by itself. As soon as I enable it again the ticking resumes. Any ideas on what I can do?
