Model: Tapo L530E   Tapo L530B
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.3.0 Build 20230821 Rel. 75926

I own two L530 Series light bulbs (the app does not specify whether it's the E or B model). Both light bulbs are connected to my wifi network.

Due to an unreliable ISP I often have internet losses which can span from a few minutes to sometimes almost a full hour which increase during the night. When an internet loss occurs the wifi connection stays up but with the exclamation mark (!) symbol next to the wifi symbol (indicating no internet connection).

I noticed that both lamps emit a white light flash during those internet losses in an interval of three to five minutes. This behaviour is annoying since the lamps are located in my bedroom and my internet losses are mostly during the night.

At the moment the best workaround is to pull the plug for both lamps every evening. This can't be the final solution since the main reason why I got smart light bulbs in a first place was to be able to remote control the lamps from my smartphone.

I would like to know how to turn off this flashing behaviour on internet connection loss since I can't find an option for this in the Tapo app

Based on my understanding, the light bulb only blinks during the initial setup. If there is a Wi-Fi or network disconnection, it won't blink when reconnecting.

Could you please provide more details about how your light bulb blinks? Is it fast or slow blinking? How long does it blink for? It would be great to share a video here (a YouTube/cloud drive link).

Does it only happen when there's an internet disconnection, or has there been a power outage as well?

Please check if you have enabled the Away Mode for the light bulb? How to set up schedule, away mode, and timer for Tapo smart devices (smart plug, smart bulb, smart switch)

During the internet disconnections I still have power. It's just a problem with the ISP. Additionally, I've checked for the Away Mode - it's turned off.

Those random flashes are different from the light flashes when initially pairing with the device. As you'll see in the video linked below the random light flashes are way shorter.

I achieved to reproduce the issue by setting up a new wifi network without internet connection. A few minutes after pairing the lamp with the network the following video was recorded: https://youtube.com/shorts/IPeVY4sAkAQ. Around 0:18 the light flash occurs. Since the video was recorded during the day it isn't very noticable.

In the logs of the wifi network I saw there are a lot (almost one per second) of DNS requests to:

  • time (dot) windows (dot) com
  • pool (dot) ntp (dot) org
  • 0 (dot) android (dot) pool (dot) ntp (dot) org
  • pool (dot) ntp (dot) org
  • security (dot) iot (dot) i (dot) tplinknbu (dot) com

The first few domains link to NTP servers for time synchronization. I thought this flashing may be warning that the lamp's time isn't synchronized. Therefore, I allowed all traffic with those NTP servers in my newly created wifi network but it didn't change anything.

This does seem unusual. We would like to forward your case to a specialist, and they will help follow it up, if you are willing to do further analysis, please check your inbox later and respond.
