Very interested in Matter 1.3 in Home Assistant. I was under the impression the energy monitoring would work with Matter from the description on Amazon.

This is crucial for me. Massive gap, as original poster said its just a smart relay currently. Wont be buying more until this is done

But, the one and only advantage that TP-Link have at the moment is the slim design (you can fit two P110Ms in an Australian double socket side by side).
 

I really don't like the TP-Link as a brand and this experience just re-enforces that. I've got 6 plugs which are sitting in their box. I'll happily jump ship as soon as there's a matter plug that can be used in a double PowerPoint.

I am sure TP-Link will be giving us a firmware update before the end of the year.

 

After all - the competitor (Meross) has a beta firmware which people seem to be able to get via support which is working with energy monitoring and HA, see:

Release this update asap. I bought the unit because the box lists matter protocol and power monitoring, without highlighting it’s one or the other.

  @Wayne-TP my issue is that currently the box is misleading.

 

it is saying it is a matter device with power monitoring. Yet you say here that it's firmware doesn't support power monitoring over matter.

 

i feel very let down and just another TPLINK advertising garbage. Is this going to be like the lack of web GUI for the Deco units? I'm sure that request has hundreds of upvotes... yet is just ignored by TPLink...

@Cammm Mind that Matter energy reporting is a standard: there's no development needed for Tapo to support specific smart home platforms or support in smart home platforms for specific vendors like Tapo. It would be very very wrong if Home Assistant or SmartThings had to add specific code for Tapo when they support the standard.

 

The active power reporting attribute is perfectly defined in Matter spec and it's so simple: it's just the measurement in milliwatts. It's the same subscription mechanism used to report the brightness level of a bulb or the temperature of a sensor. The only care needed by Tapo is being a bit smart when emitting a report so it's meaningful and fast when a change in power consumption happens and doesn't flood the Matter controller with reports when the power hasn't changed much.

 

Also, again, both SmartThings and Home Assistant do support it so it should work as long as they comply with the standard.
