Hi everyone,

I’m a beginner when it comes to electrical work and could really use your help. I recently purchased a TP-Link dimmer switch to control the brightness of the four LED spotlights in my kitchen, which are all connected to the same switch. (See the picture)

I confirmed my spot LEDs are dimmable and all four spots are controlled by only one switch.

When I opened the switch box, I noticed there were two red wires and two black wires, and I’m not sure how these relate to the four spotlights. The new TP-Link dimmer switch has the following connectors: one line, one load, one neutral, and one ground. The neutral and ground wires are present in the box, so that’s not an issue, but I’m confused about how to deal with the red and black wires and whether I need a different type of switch for this setup.

I’ve installed basic switches before, but this is my first time dealing with something like this. Does anyone know how I should approach this? Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated!

  @joeltt

The red and black wires should be the live and load wires of the light bulbs. A live, load, and ground wire is the basic wiring set for powering a standard lighting device. You may double-check it with a multimeter and verify which red and black wires are the correct combination that controls the same light fixture.

Before the wiring, please ensure the total power of the bulbs does not exceed the maximum power supported by the switch.
