Tapo robot vacuums use systematic back-and-forth horizontal or vertical cleaning patterns to ensure optimal cleaning efficiency. If your device is not cleaning in an organized pattern but moving randomly and creating messy cleaning paths, the following suggestions may help to resolve the issue.

 

If the robot vacuum is making circles randomly, it is considered normal as this usually occurs in tight spaces or corners. The robot vacuum will avoid obstacles and do self-positioning continuously.

1. Avoid strong sunlight

Intense sunlight will interfere LiDAR sensor, causing navigation errors or false obstacle detection. During the cleaning:

• Close the curtains or blinds to reduce direct sunlight in the cleaning area.
• Consider scheduling cleaning tasks during low-light periods (e.g. early morning or evening).

 

2. Address reflective surfaces in the environment

Mirrors, metallic surfaces, or glossy finishes will interfere with the LiDAR scanning and cause problems with the robot vacuum's positioning. If there are such objects or elements in the environment:

• Position reflective objects at least 30 cm above ground level.
• If the objects cannot be relocated, cover the lower 30 cm portion of the surface with non-reflective material (e.g., fabric, cardboard).

 

3. Do NOT use the robot vacuum on the overly wet floors

Excessively wet floors can cause the robot vacuum's wheels to slip. In this case, we recommend pre-treating the floor before using the vacuum for cleaning and mopping.

 

4. Clean the wheels

Oil stains, dirt, or debris on the main wheel may reduce traction and disrupt movement. Wipe the wheels with a dry or slightly damp cloth to remove contaminants. Ensure no foreign objects are lodged in the wheel treads.

5. Check if the LiDAR sensor is clean and avoid any obstructions

• For RV20 and RV20 Max series, use a soft cloth to wipe the sensor area gently. If there are stubborn stains, first wipe with a damp cloth to remove the residue, then dry with a clean cloth.
• For RV30 and RV30 Max series, check if there is any hair or paper debris stuck in the LiDAR sensor and clean it. Do not put any cover on it.
