Oh boy - why won't my lightbulbs stay on? I didn't expect it to be this hard or take up this much time! 
They always go offline

Please share more details about your case so we can provide more helpful suggestions. For example, which Tapo smart bulb do you have? What's its hardware and firmware version? What's the exact phenomenon of the offline issue? Does the light bulb appear offline in the app? Did you check router's online client list to confirm whether the smart bulbs are still connected to the WiFi when it shows offline in the app? Does this happen when you're on a remote network (e.g., using cellular data), or does it happen on both local and remote networks? etc.
