is there a router that allows single SSID name and have an wifi USB adapter pick a faster speed band automatically?, I have tested C-7 and it seems to pick a slower 2.4 on reboot,
with my PC next to the router and connected via wifi.

The 2.4 tends to have better distance and stronger signal whereas the 5 has faster speeds. I suspect your device is going for the one with the strongest signal.

I prefer different names for my SSIDs. Better control and if you have WIFI issues it helps to isolate them.

Your router may allow you to define the same ssid to 2.4 and 5g networks, but doing so is not good procedure and can result in devices that support both protocols having difficulty connecting.
