Model: Deco M9 Plus
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version:

According to https://www.tp-link.com/us/support/faq/1794/ , mixed backhaul (wired + wireless) is not supported.

>> Note: The Wi-Fi backhaul and Ethernet backhaul won’t work at the same time. When two Deco units are connected via an Ethernet cable, the Ethernet backhaul will take effect and Wi-Fi backhaul will be disconnected.

I don't understand why it cannot be supported, especially for AP mode.

According to this FAQ: https://www.tp-link.com/us/support/faq/2399/ , two AP mode units can be connected via Ethernet to the main router, establishing an Ethernet backhaul. Can I add another AP mode unit, not connected via Ethernet? What would happen if I do that?

I plan to mainly use Ethernet backhaul connections for the rooms where Ethernet ports are already available, and add wireless backhaul supported AP-mode unit for hallway (where ethernet is not reachable from the main router)

I am waiting for my order of 3-units.

I will try the wired/wireless backhaul configuration for AP mode, and update here how it goes.

yes you can add one unit and it will use whatever backhaul is available

the documentation is a bit flaky

using wifi backhaul impacts performance in the worst cases it will half the available throughput

tho this depends entirely on proximity to the next node, network load ect ect

You were correct. The documentation was not correct, at least for AP mode.

This is my config, and the mixed wired/wireless backhaul works!

Internet -- main existing router --- (Ethernet) --- Deco M9 AP1

                                                                                          ((( WiFi ))) Deco M9 AP3

                                                 --- (Ehternet) --- Deco M9 AP2

That means whatever backhual (either Ethernet or WiFi) available is used. I guess WiFi backhaul is utilized between AP1 & AP3 and AP2 & AP3, while Ethernet backhaul is used between AP1 & AP2.

so with your knowledge of that do you think I could do

Internet --  (Ethernet) --- Deco M7 - (powerlineEhternet)

                                       ((( WiFi ))) Deco M5

                                       ((( WiFi ))) Deco M5

- (powerlineEhternet) --- Deco M7

                                       ((( WiFi ))) Deco M5

                                       ((( WiFi ))) Deco M5

Likely...

However, my configuration is one main router (non Deco) and AP mode Decos, while yours is using a Deco M7 as a main router and additional M5 & M7s.

My config homogeniously AP mode M9 only, so I cannot be sure.
