Model: Deco
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version:

If you have since updated your iPhone you may see the Deco Wi-Fi shown as having weak security. This is due to the Deco supporting WPA/WPA2 (TKIP) by default for compatibility purposes. The iPhone now recognizes WPA as a weak security type. This may also be the same with other security suites with the similar notification.

If you feel you would like to switch your wireless security to either WPA2-PSK (AES) or WPA2-PSK (AES)+WPA-PSK (TKIP) you can download and install the following beta firmware. Future firmware will also have that ability in the future.

User method 2 of this FAQ that shows how you would upload the firmware: https://www.tp-link.com/us/support/faq/1599/

*Note* If you have the Deco M9 Plus v2, and you currently have firmware 1.2.x ("x" being any number), then you need to download this firmware, extract it, and use the utility which is linked in the .pdf to update it (link)

Tony, I know this is a beta, but is it a relatively stable beta? I appreciate you guys fixing the security, but we're relying on our internet for work, college, and school right now, and I don't want the internet going down. Can this firmware be rolled back to 1.4.0 if it proves to be buggy for some reason?

@crizthebard

The firmware is in response to the notification that Apple gives since Apple doesn't like networks that have any form of TKIP running along with other encryptions.

If I had services that I couldn't afford to have go down I would wait for a later release or an official release. So far I have not seen any recent reports of issues with the beta, but the firmware links listed above are optional and not really necessary or needed to immediately be upgraded to.

@Tony I just updated my Deco 4M to the new firmware but where is the option to select the WPS security? I checked the app and logged in through the web interface to my main Deco unit and I do not see anywhere I can select and choose the encryption I want. I currently, using my Deco 4M in Access Point mode.

Thank you.

@Ec7

I am not sure what you mean by WPS as that is usually for adding a wireless device to your network by pressing a button on each one. The firmware pertains to being able to select AES as a wireless security option in the wireless menu of the Deco app.

@Tony Hi Tony, where in the Deco app can we select AES? Also since I am using the Deco 4M in Access point mode, will still be able to select AES?

Thank you.

@Tony I installed the beta first on an S4 when it was first released and later on a M9 Plus and haven't had any issues.

@Tony

I installed the latest IOS app and tried to update the Deco system, but it says version 1.2.11 Build 20190926 is the latest build.

I have a pair of three: Deco M9 Plus (eu) Ver:2.0

I do have some issues with the current version (that’s why I am trying to update) and I saw the "weak security" message.

We sometimes have a client that is “connected” to the wifi but it than has no internet excess.

Any help would be appreciated.
