Model: TL-WR940N  
Hardware Version: V6
Firmware Version: 3.20.1 Build 200316 Rel.34392n (4555)

After upgrading the firmware to : 3.20.1 Build 200316 Rel.34392n (4555) 
The wifi speed went drastically down , I used to get ~44mbps speed over the wifi but now I get ~27mbps only (download)

Drastic speeds would be something like 5 to 10 Mbps. 

 

Factory reset the router and leave it on the default settings and monitor the speeds.

 

Test wired speeds as well to see what the router is getting from the WAN port. 

 

I would also make sure to use as many different wireless devices so one device is not the bottle neck.
