5G light on RE505X turns on when wireless light is red

My RE505X 5G light is off most of the time, altho I can see clients connected to it when I login thru the Tether app. Those clients are usually actively connected to the internet.
The 2.4G light is always lit and it also has a few clients connected.
Occaisionally the wireless light toggles red for maybe 10-20 secs. When that is red, the 5G light lights up. When the wireless light goes back to blue, the 5G light goes off. This seems counter-intuitive to me.
My wife complains about poor connectivity from time-to-time (this extender is in the room with her Mac laptop). It is usually listed as a 5G client. I have not been able to determine if the wireless light is red when she has problems, as it's is always back to blue by the time I get to it.
