Hardware Version: V4
Firmware Version: Build 200421 Rel.38950n

I am using ths router in WISP mode. I want to change the radio channel to "auto" but keep getting the message "If WDS is enabled, channel must be set according to RootAP." There is no setting for WDS anywhere.

Thanks for reaching out to us. 

WDS in that message means wireless bridging. If your TL-WR802N is in WISP mode, then its channel will be synchronized with the front-end Wi-Fi. Hope my answer can help you~
