  @Jepo99 Because "hiding" the SSID provides ZERO security.

  @Napsterbater provides more security than not hiding it.

  @MDA400 except, it doesn't, your devices send the SSID in the clear when "talking" to the network. They now also have send it out constantly no matter where in the world they are making it easier to track them.

And anyone who even has a chance of cracking your WPA2 or higher key can find it in less then a few seconds, if that.

And last, hidden networks means there is something to hide, guess where someone is going to go looking first.

  @Napsterbater

The time it takes to find the hidden SSID is more than looking at the wifi network list on a device.

  @MDA400 .... And? Who cares if they know the network name... they still have to crack your WPA2.

You can see that there are hidden networks in about 1 second with any "WiFi Scanner"

And if they can crack your WPA2, they know how to get the name in another second or two.....

And If they see a hidden network, the obvious question, whats so secret they need to hide it, makes for the first target.

And again, now your devices have to constantly "yell out' that network name when searching for it no matter where in the world they are, makes the devices/person easier to track.

  @Napsterbater it's all about personal preferences... I like to clean up my kitchen after cooking dinner, others leave it a mess till the next day... I also like my list of networks I run as clean as possible... So when I have guests, they don't have to ask to which network they have to connect and start aksing where the other network is for... I all depends how you run your life and how you run your business... I like to remove the clutter in my life and it annoys me I can't hide my IoT network... not even from a safety point of view, but just from a 'clean up' perspective...

The level of ignorance from TP-link on this topic annoys me too... Just add the option, it's obvious that a lot of people like this and for those who don't like it, just don't check that box...

Let users decide what works for them. If this was purely a discussion about security then WPA and WPA2 should no longer be offered. All of my IoT devices work fine on my hidden network.
