I don't see a way to change the security protocol, does anyone know how to do that?

You can see how to do this from the WebUI our FAQ: How to Change the Security Settings on Your TP-Link Router

 

You may also be able to find the option in the tether app under your wireless settings, where you should see a lock symbol allowing you to change the protocol. This may be under the tools tab of the app.
