Fixed IP address vs reserved address
How do I set up a fixed IP address vs reserved address for a specific device?

Well that was kind of my question to you.
When I Google Fixed IP vs. Reserved IP, I found there is a difference. One explanation was:
The primary difference is that the DHCP server actually knows the IP address of machines with DHCP reservations, meaning it can pick IP addresses for other machines in a way so as to not conflict with the reserved IP address.
However, a static IP means that the machine does not have to be connected to the DHCP server in order to hold its IP address.
So it appears we can reserve an address in the Deco unit, a fixed IP has to be done in the device itself.
I did actually do it on both as a experiment and found the subject PC didn't have internet access. Reving the fixed IP on the PC fixed that issue.
So to all intents you are correct, for Deco units Reservation has the most important benefits of Fixed IP.
I was messing with Static Routing, but thats now clearly not fixed IP.
As for changing the name of a device, I understand its just for me, but its not working (it used to).
Address reservation >>Device Info>> tap device name = Nothing.
"Save" is greyed out and delete is the only option.
Anymore ideas?

Naming an online device:
From the inital page of the app:
- tap inside the "Online Clients" section
- you get a list of the connected clients
- tap on a client
- you get details of a client
- tap on the name of the client
- you get a page with the device type and the device name
- you can change the name from that page
If the device is not online, you have to tap on the "offline clients" area at the botton of the list of connected clients.
Yes that works thanks.

@BritG1 You can reserve a fixed IP address using the Deco app.

Thanks for your replies.
I see the address reservation and understand it. The only other option I see is Static Routing but that doesn't appear to be fixed IP for a specific device.
Also in reserved address - I would like to change the device name .. I thought it was possible by holding down on current name, but now it doesn't seem to work.
Do you know how to do it?
Thanks

If you reserve an IP address for a specific device, that device will always be assigned that address, is it not the same as a fixed IP address for that device?
Changing the device name only affects the name displayed in the app. You can do that in the app, by tapping the device in the list of clients, then tapping on the name.

Indeed, you have two ways to assign a fixed IP address to a device:
1) by configuring that fixed IP address on the device (and configuring as well, on the device, the subnet mask, the default gateway, and the addresses of the DNS servers). In that case, you must be sure that the DHCP server will not assign that same IP address to another device.
2) by configuring the DHCP server to distribute that fixed IP address to that device (the DHCP server will inform the device as well about the other items), and by configuring the device to obtain all info via DHCP (this is the default setting on many devices).

Sigh......
Well I thought I would add a TP-Link 3 usb / Internet adapter to replace the generic one I had set up using your help.
Deco sees it a "Unknown Device" but since I have the IP I can change the name.
However, I cant get the deco to Reserve the desired IP to avoid me changing lots of things about accessing the Media device.
How do I get the Deco unit to reserve a specific IP - I removed the previous reservation and rebooted the Media device several times, but DHCP is not assigning the IP I need.
The Media player is not a device where I can set it up with a fixed IP like a PC.
This seems a strange limitation.

What do you mean by "I cant get the deco to Reserve the desired IP"
1) you do not know how to configure that in the Deco app?
2) you did not succeed configuring that in the deco app?
3) it is configured in the app, but the device does not obtain that address?
