Model: Deco S4
Hardware Version: V3
Firmware Version:

Bought the S4 to boost my cell phone and ROKU signals.  It failed big time.  Instructions suck!

I plugged  my ethernet cable into it and was able to set it to my phone but it said it was not "secure"......, okay now what?

I won't run it in a non secure fashion.

So then I tried the on line set up but it could not connect without all the modem settings (S4 could not read it).  That led to contact your provider for the settings: Dynamic IP, Sub mask, Gateway, DNS etc that failed after Centrury Link pretty much sent me to you.  Waiste of time......., what I tried failed too.  I'm not an IT professional.

I don't want to turn the S4 into my main modem, I just want to boost the signal, IN A SECURE MODE, in my living room.  Even if it only benefits my cell phone and not the wifi roku.

Now what do I do?

When you tried to set up the new S4 did you just plug in the ethernet cable? Or did you use the app as well?

Need help with the Deco app, setup, Ethernet backhaul, network switch or rolling back firmware? Router or AP mode? https://community.tp-link.com/us/home/forum/topic/699816?page=1

@HelpFixDecoApp I first connecteed my ethernet cable, then power, got the flashing blue and then connected my phone to deco s4.  It worked but not secure, didnt want to put my whole home in a unsecure position.  Not sure what was not secure means but did not like the warning.

Did sign up via my phone but then I got another message to provide all my router/provider data. It failed to connect, and I feared the S4 would become the main router which might create other issues, just want to boost one room.  I did restart my modem as asked.  Very confusing

Not sure if it is asking for my current modem password or just a new one for the S4, and different name too?

Sorry, just confused.  Everyone said it was easy setup, not so from my experience.

Is the S4 the only deco you have? IF so how is your network set up?

If this isn't your first deco please let me know how many decos you have

@HelpFixDecoApp  This is the only one I have.  I read on line this was a good and easy way to boost a weak signal.

I was hoping it would take my ethernet cable signal in the living room and boost it in that location.  I figured if it connects to my current modem via ethernet cable it would give me a stronger signal in that room.

Did I misunderstand this?

You can use it to boost the signal yes but there is a little bit more set up than just plugging it in

First you need to download the Deco app. Here is a link to the app on the google play store

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tplink.tpm5&hl=en_US

And below is the link to the app on the apple store

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/tp-link-deco/id1186159417

Once you have the app installed follow the instructions in this video at the time index i set

https://youtu.be/7X7Q2mMGiS0?t=113

When you set up the new SSID and Password use a different name and password then you are currectly using for your current network

Once you get the S4 added to the app let me know and we can go from there

Tried multiple times, reset the S4 (I think I fat fingered something on passwords) but was still unsuccessful.  Still allows me to run in a non secure mode. I have loaded and unloaded the app hoping to clear it up.  Nope.

Pretty much wasted a day.  Maybe you can help me tomorrow figuring out all the Dynamic IP, Gateway, etc for manual entry.  When I open my router software it is hard to tell the info your app is asking specifics about (about 7 or 8 items) i.e Static IP or PPoE etc (Century link C3000z modem).

Hard to understand why I can't lock down the S4 when connected via ethernet cord directly from the modem without all the hassles.  You'd think once I give it a name and password in the software that would be it.  Nope turns "solid red" and says no ethernet connection.

Frustrated....

Were you able to get the S4 added to the deco app? If so is it still in the app? There are others steps we need to after the S4 is added to the app

If you still have it added to the deco app follow the steps in this post

  @CjJ05

Thanks for the followup.

I tried several times but was unable to connect.  I followed the youtube and thought I did what the app required but S4 turned "SOLID RED" . I had to reset the S4 multiple times because even after unplugging everthing it remained solid red.

What is hard to understand is how the S4 can connect to my modem and phone wifi in a non secure mode but when I follow the app process it turns solid red and says it no internet connection. Solid red says something wrong with the S4.  Could it be it is defective?

Please keep this conversation open, I might not get back to dealing with the install until Thursday sometime.  Currently I have removed the app from my phone, I will try again with the app installed later.

Please let me know if it's possible the problems I'm having is due to a defect in the S4?

Looking forward to making this work!

Thanks kindly

Do you have a switch in your network? If so make sure you have everything connected using one of the options below
