Model: Deco BE63
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version: 1.1.7

Just bought a 3-pack of the Deco BE63s. Setup has been a major hassle (I've wiped/reinitiated the network 6 times now).

My network setup is: Cable provider (Xfinity) coax cable from outside > structured wiring closet using Arris T25 modem (non-wireless model) > Leviton 4 port router (model #47611-GT4) > conduit that takes the CAT5E cable to various rooms in my house.

All Decos are on the same floor. The "main" deco is using ethernet cable from the wall (technically my router is "in front" of all the wall jacks); another Deco is in our home theater room wired via ethernet from the wall; the 3rd Deco is in our kitchen using wireless.

The first time I set up the Deco mesh, I used the default router mode, but soon realized that I should be using AP mode instead to benefit from ethernet backhaul, so I deleted Decos 2 & 3 using the app, unplugging them from power duringg that process, then deleted the entire network from the main Deco and started over from scratch.

Now, using AP mode on the main Deco, the 2nd Deco in my home theater room (using wired ethernet) is not showing up as being wired (in the app, there's just a straight pulsating line between the main Deco and the home theater Deco, with no ethernet cable icon as there supposedly should be).

The 3rd Deco, in the kitchen, refuses to show up at all; during setup, I'll get the yellow LED at boot, then the pulsing blue > solid blue > green, while the app says the Deco can't be found and is generally unhelpful. The Deco LED will then flash red (dropped from network), then eventually green (found network).

The app still doesn't register the 3rd Deco.

I've tried to set up this network 6 times now, and it's always the same. Extremely frustrating.

My network setup can't be changed: my house is hard wired, with a structured wiring closet, and I'm not going to abandon all the work I put into that just because TPLink thinks that their units should be the first point of contact after my modem.

If I'd known that these were so finicky, I'd have gone with another company, or stuck with my old Apple Airport Extreme towers, which have worked flawlessly for over 10 years now (I just wanted a bit more coverage, FFS).

Any help will be appreciated, or I'm probably going to RMA these and look elsewhere.

  @Kirudub

Is there a reason you don't want to use the 'router' mode? Let the 2 other Deco's use the wireless backhaul?

I have a BE65 V2 and use it that way? No problems on a large single floor home. Excellent connection to the 2 Satellite Deco's, farthest is about 50 Ft. away from the main one. Great coverage through out the house (2,400 SQFT) and even outside.

  @IrvSp When I first set it up the Deco network using router mode, signal in my home theater room wasn't super (it had trouble finding the Deco in setup, for example), so I figured that I'd take advantage of the available ethernet jack right next to it in the wall; and TP Link makes it sound like that should be no problem.

Thanks for your input, though...

  @Kirudub

So there are currently three recomended ways to set up your deco's in AP mode. If you look at the post below.

https://community.tp-link.com/en/home/forum/topic/98898

I sounds like you went with option #3. I recomended you try option number two and see if you have any better luck,

Also this time I want you to switch the deco locations. Switch the 1st deco with the 3rd deco and try to set it up first with just the 3rd deco. If it complease set up with the 3rd deco we know it's a working unit. If the set up fails we know the 3rd deco might be DOA

If the 3rd deco is working I want you to update the firmware 1st before adding another deco.

Please note that the Deco app may not always display the latest firmware version. To check and update, log in to your Deco account via the following link. http://tplinkdeco.net/

Once logged in:
    - Click on "Advanced"
    - Select "System"
    - Choose "Firmware Upgrade"
    - Scroll to the bottom of the page and click "Check for Upgrades."
    - Download and install any available firmware updates.

Once you have the most up to date firmware on the 3rd deco now try adding the 2nd deco. If it works, update the firmware using the above steps then try adding the 1st deco back in

If the 1st deco is added make sure to update its firmware if it fails to add then we will go from there.

Hey, thanks for the suggestions, I'll try them. The main Deco did ask me to update firmware on the initial setup, and the 3rd Deco did work after that initial setup (when they were in router mode), but I'll check, the app definitely seems to be hit or miss.

  @HelpFixDecoApp

I tried the web interface, and both my browsers (Safari & FIefox) were unable to find the site, so sad trombone.sad

Forgot to add at the start of the thread that my hardware version for the Deco set is v2.6.

The firmware update that kicked in when I first set it up is v1.1.7 Build 20250324 Rel. 32980.

App says I'm up to date.

I'll try the swap you mention when I don't need the internet and have the time to spare, but I'm thinking that they all work (the trio worked when I initially had it in router mode), they just aren't doing what they're supposed to be doing.

I'm mainly irritated that this is becoming such a damn time sink, my entire weekend was shot, and evenings spent hovering over the screen of my phone while the radar animation chugs along looking for Decos (and then cheerfully telling me they can't be found) is not what I find fulfilling.

  @Kirudub Gonna have to agree to use one of the BE63s as a router and discontinue use of that 10/100 Leviton unit.

When you open the box the units are already synced as a set.  Once you reset them, they are no longer synced.  The three need to be brought close together, resynced, then relocated to their final placement.  You can't expect them to sync over Ethernet, nor far away in the kitchen...

IF you insist on using the Leviton:

1 Gbps T25 -> 100 Mbps Leviton router -> 2.5 Gbps BE63...

  @jzchen

Thanks for the info about the syncing, I didn't realize that resetting them broke that.

Yeah, I know the Leviton router is old; I'm planning on buying an newer 1 Gbps unit soon, but it seems like I'd still have the same issue I'm trying to get sorted, where the Decos aren't behaving as they should in AP mode.

Also, I have a structured wiring panel in my home office wall where my modem & router are currently housed, with conduit feeding ethernet to a few key rooms in my home.

The Deco unit is too chubby to fit in the wall panel, and I'm not going to have an ethernet cable snaking out of a closed wall panel door just so I can connect to a Deco.

The whole point of making the panel and spending the time running conduit through my home when I remodeled my home was to keep things clean.

Sorry if I'm sounding a bit salty, but this feels like I've bought a product that doesn't do what it said it would on the box.

All, thanks for your time on this.

I reset the units and got them resynced, but just have them running in router mode for now. Getting it to work in AP mode like I wanted to is just not working right now.

I did get some nag windows in teh app about the fac that my ehternet isn't 1Gbps, so myabe my olde router is part of the problem, so I'm going to get a 1Gbps model.

Maybe if I feel like being masochistic I'll give it another go sometime down the line!

  @Kirudub I have the same comm box but I ended up using other products in it.  My latest are 2 10 GbE 8 port switches (Model TL-SX1008).   Even the next/upgraded "gateway" 47611-WG4 has been discontinued.  All you'd need to do is bypass that gateway and connect the T25 to a Deco placed nearby, then connect the Deco's LAN ports as needed...
