Model: Deco S4
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.6.2

I have a 3 Deco setup in my home connected to a Starlink modem and it works fine. I wanted to add a fourth Deco in my metal garage about 300 feet away. I have two Ubiquity radios I setup as a wreless bridge and connected to the Main Deco and to the Garage Deco but it doesn't work. If I have the garage doors open I can gat a very weak signal on Wifi but when I plug the radios in the garage Deco no longer works. The radios havew a good connection, I can hook my laptop to the radio and stream a movie across it but the Deco will not go into backhaul mode through the radios. I have the Starlink modem connected to the main Deco, the two remote Decos in the house are connected Wifi, one remote Deco has my TV hardwired to it, the other remote Deco has an Ooma phone box hardwired to it. The garage Deco only has the radio hardwired to it.

Am I missing something or will this setup not work for another reason? Thanks!

Unfortunately, this is a known compatibility issue. Deco's Ethernet backhaul feature uses the IEEE 1905.1 protocol, which may not work properly through certain network devices, including wireless bridges. While your Ubiquity wireless bridge successfully passes regular network traffic (like streaming on your laptop), it may not properly support or pass through the IEEE 1905.1 protocol that Deco units use to establish Ethernet backhaul.

This is similar to compatibility issues we've seen with certain network switches. For example, several D-Link switches are not compatible with Deco's Ethernet backhaul for the same protocol-related reasons, even though they work fine for regular network traffic.

Here are a few things you could try:

1. Check if there's a firmware update for your Ubiquity radios that might improve compatibility
2. Try setting your Deco system to Access Point (AP) mode • this changes how the backhaul protocol operates and might work better through the wireless bridge
3. Consider the placement • since you mentioned getting a weak WiFi signal with garage doors open, if you could position one of your indoor Deco units closer to the garage, it might establish a stronger WiFi backhaul connection

Given the 300-foot distance and metal garage construction, WiFi backhaul alone will likely remain challenging. The wireless bridge approach is creative, but the protocol compatibility issue may prevent it from working as intended with Deco's Ethernet backhaul feature.

Need help with the Deco app, setup, Ethernet backhaul, network switch or rolling back firmware? Router or AP mode? https://community.tp-link.com/us/home/forum/topic/699816?page=1
