Archer C7 & NAS
Archer C7 & NAS

Model : Archer C7

Hardware Version : Archer C7 v2 00000000

Firmware Version : 3.15.1 Build 160719 Rel.57530n

ISP : Frontier FIOS

I recently installed an Archer C7 and love it. After installation my NAS disappeared from my Windows network. I figured out the IP is outside of the default IP in the Archer interface. The ending default is 192.168.0.199 however, my NAS IP is 192.168. 1... When I try and change the 0 to a one and a higher number than the IP I get an error and it won't change. Thanks for any help you can provide.

May I know how to you connect your NAS to C7?
It seems that there are two DHCP servers in your network and the NAS gets an ip address from the other one.

The NAS is connected to an 8 port switch that is connected to the C7.

Do you have any other routers at home? Or does the switch get a feature called DHCP server, if yes, you should shut down the dhcp server on switch.
In addition, just try to connect the NAS directly to C7 bypassing the switch and check if NAS could obtain an ip address from Archer C7.

The NAS is in my basement and my C7 is on the main floor of my house. Is there no way possible to extend the ending IP on the C7 past 192.168.0.199?

What do you mean by mentioning this message?

I have tried to extend the ending IP to include the IP of my NAS, but I get the error.

I have this one resolved. I changed the IP on my NAS box. I'm still not satisfied with not being able to extend the IP range of the C7, but it is what it is. Admins can lock or delete this thread if need be.

No idea what you mean. Of course you can extend the DHCP address range on Archer C7:

If you want to use a larger subnet to move DHCP address range one further (did you mean that with "changing '0' to '1'"?), you either have to adjust the Archer's base address to be in the same subnet or to change the subnet mask such as in:

With this subnet mask you will get 510 useable IP addresses, although current implementation on Archer C7 lets you define only 256 addresses for the DHCP address pool (should be enough for most users except you run a data center at home :) ):

This gives you 512 IP addresses from 192.168.0.0 to 192.168.1.255, where the first and last ones are reserved for broadcasts. Thus, the router can still have the IP 192.168.0.1, your useable static IP range would be 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.1.0 and DHCP addresses would range from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.254. But you will also have to change subnet masks on every other device, too, so it is probably easier to just change the base IP address of the router from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.1.1 and keep the standard subnet mask.

Is it this what you want to achieve?

Yes. I was trying to make the "End IP Address" different to include the NAS IP of 192.168.1.255. When I try to change the "End IP Address" to say... 192.168.1.300 I would get an error. I fixed the problem by going into the NAS box and changing the default IP to be within the C7's default range.

Uhm, range for single octets of an IP addresses is 0 to 255. Computers use the dual system (base 2, thus 2^8 are 256 numbers from 0 to 255), not the decimal system (base 10). The Archer's behaviour is correct to throw an error on 192.168.1.300.

BTW: The "NAS IP 192.168.1.255" is not a valid IP for a single device. It's the broadcast address of the 192.168.1 subnet addressing any device in the network. Don't use that address as an IP.

See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IP_address for more information about IP addresses and subnets.
