TL-WR940N lan speed slower through router than modem

I just got this router and when testing via Ethernet connection, the speeds i'm getting are noticeably different via router than via modem.
I'm getting 110mb down and 12mb up when i'm connected directly to my modem, but my download speed is only around 50mb down when connected via Ethernet to the router.
Is there some configuration change that i need to do or some troubleshooting steps i can take?
I understand that there is speed loss via wifi, but i would think that via Ethernet the speeds should be the same, no?
