Model: Archer A20
Hardware Version: V3
Firmware Version: latest

I hooked up an 1TB external drive to an USB 3.0 port and was not recognized by the router but when connected to USB 2.0 port it worked just fine.

I worked well when it was connected to Archer A2600 USB 3.0 before. How to fix it?

@mat_919

I've got an A20, but a V1, not V3. I've got a WD 4TB External Desktop version connected to a USB 3.0 port and it works fine?

Some 'portable' USB drives take power from the USB port while the Desktop versions have their own power supply. If you have a Portable it is possible the router might no be able to provide enough power to it? USB 3.0 I recall need 870ma while the USB 2.0 only requires 500ma?

If you do have an external with a power supply, does the light on the drive work? Have you another cable you can try? Is there anything blocked the connection in the 3.0 port?

Are you using a USB 3.0 cable? From the internet... USB 3.0 cables facilitate the faster transfer rates of 4.8Gbps as well as the additional power transfer of 900 mA by doubling the amount of wires within the cable from 4 in the 2.0 cables to 8 in the 3.0 cables. USB 2.0 cables transfer data at 480 Mbps and provide power up to 500 mA.

@IrvSp I have 1TB drive sitting in HDD dock with USB3.0 which is connected by USB3.0 cable and powered separately, so there should be no issue. At least there was no issue with older router.

Do try a different cable and look at the pins on the device and router to see if you have any damaged ones. I just had to replace my USB to lighting cable that sits static between my iMac and an old iPad that just displays my security cams 24/7.
