Can I set up a different password then what the router is for the extender?

No, while a Range Extender can have a separate SSID while it is operating as a traditional Range Extender, it will use the same password.

Hi, It is planned to add this feature to range extenders and some models have supported it already.

Support Customizing Password and Encryption Type on Range Extenders
