Model: Deco X55   Deco X20
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version:

I started with 2 X20s and added on 2 X55s a few years later and am now having issues. My internet connection is 1gig into the modem that is connected to one of the X55s(HW V1.26 firmware 1.20) and hard wired(~30m Cat8) to the other X55(HW V1.6 firmware 1.6.1) and the two X20s are connected wirelessly to the second X55.

When I am connected to one of the X55s my speeds are what is expected, upper 800s-900Mbps. When I am connected to one of the X20s I get 150-250mbps. Connection strength on the X20s is listed as 'medium' and they are within 20' of the X55 at most. All units have up to date firmware, QoS is set to 1000 up and down. I was considering swapping the V1.6 hardware X55 to be the main deco because the firmware is newer(?), but it seems like the x20s are the issue.

  @Kithas I believe you are simply limited by the wireless backhaul, the wireless connection between two Deco.

Do you have obstacles between the two wirelessly connected Decos?

The basement x20 is almost line of sight on the same floor, the other is 2 floors up but only about 12-15' away(on the floor on 2f and in the ceiling of the basement). I thought one of the main reasons to go with a system like this was that you didn't have to tear up walls to get wired backhauls between the units.

@fersab

Thanks for your detailed reply. I am having some trouble seeing the efficacy of your suggestions and I would like some clarification.

1. One of the main reasons I went with a mesh setup was that I wouldn't have to tear up my walls running rj45 everywhere.

2. The placement really can't be adjusted much, the obstructions are not moveable. The X55 is in the ceiling of the basement, one x20 is on the other side of the basement nearly line of sight, and the second is on the floor of the second floor of the house. I have them rotated so the antenna's are oriented correctly.

3. All firmware is up to date. The X55's are different hardware versions so the 'latest' firmware is different.

4. I have remade this network multiple times with no resulting improvement.

5. Wouldn't that also defeat some of the purpose of the mesh? When I go into the yard or the furthest part of the second story 2.4ghz is going to be stronger and my wireless devices will have to jump to a new network.

6. I'm not convinced that the X55's are that much better, and dropping 150$ on a maybe isn't that attractive. They both have wifi 6 and are both rated well over the 700mbps-1gbps I am expecting.

7. I will try swapping them but considering that when connected to the x55 in the basement I am getting expected speeds I do not thing the main deco is causing the slowdown.

  @Kithas As there is no wireless backhaul from your main Deco, I would use a X20 as main.

I would use the X55 where the wireless coverage is the most important.

  @yves_b

Interesting. Would the older hardware not cause a processing bottleneck?

  @Kithas I believe the processor is far from being the bottleneck with your traffic.

  @yves_b

Reconfigured with one of the x20s as the main deco. Unfortunately it is still within the 150-250mbps range when connected to the x55 in the satellite position now. Still a good troubleshooting step as this rules out upgrading the x20s as a solution also.
