thr router I have is ax4400. Purchased the home shield and it is not helping either. It is a junk product with an insider job of trying to have people buy more of the products to get more money out of tubing thr long run. Just a big circle

How is it being hacked and what are you seeing?

I know I am getting hacked after I personalized the router and put passwords. Change the. Name of the router. Thr device is renamed and password to connect to WiFi is different. Alss in the middle of watching g a streamed tv show lose internet 5 times

A router can be hacked from wifi or over the internet. A device on your network may be the entry point. If it gets hacked again, try using only Ethernet only to see if it gets hacked. If not, then the threat may be from WIFI so you know how to address. 

 

Some things to do:

 

Reset to factory.

Use different passwords. Make them long and strong, both the router password and the wifi passwords.

Do not use the default SSIDs. 

Be sure the rouuter firmware is up to date

Be sure all of your devices' firmware is up to date.

Turm WPS off.

Add devices one at a time as they can be the entry point.

Do not use port forwarding

Use all firewalls.

Use a white list. 

Look for MACs that do not match your devices and block them. Google the MAC prefix may help determine where the threat is coming from.  

Do not use APs or Extenders as that is more entry points. 

Limit number of devices that can attach to the router. 

Use QoS to see if you can direct all resources to your devices.

Manually assign the IP address for all your devices. 

 

If WIFI is suspected:

 

Be sure to use the highest wifi Authentication and Encryption method.

use lowest power setting.

If a wifi direction is suspected. block the signal best you can from that direction. 

The 5GHz band is faster but has shorter distance so turn off the 2.4 GHz band if able. 

 

If someone hacks you for the WIFI, then do everything to make it not useful to them such as power off when not in use, change SSIDs and passords often, Use a restrictive DNS, set up a dummy wifi using an old router that is not connected to the internet,...
