Archer BE700 QoS catastrophically destroys throughput when enabled (firmware 1.2.2)
I have a reproducible bug where enabling QoS on my Archer BE700 destroys my internet connection rather than managing it.
Hardware: Archer BE700 v1.0 Firmware: 1.2.2 Build 20251027 rel.47412 ISP: Spectrum (Austin, Texas, USA)Internet plan: ~620 Mbps down / ~32 Mbps up (measured with macOS networkquality)
Issue:
With QoS disabled, my connection performs as expected: ~460 Mbps down, ~33 Mbps up, Medium responsiveness (~247 RPM, ~240ms under-load latency).
When I enable QoS with Download Bandwidth set to 560 Mbps and Upload Bandwidth set to 29 Mbps (90% of measured capacity, which is the standard best-practice setting for SQM configurations), the router does not gracefully shape traffic. Instead, my connection is crippled:
- Download drops from ~460 Mbps to ~5-13 Mbps
- Upload degrades
- Responsiveness drops from ~247 RPM to 16-18 RPM (Low rating)
- Under-load latency balloons from ~240ms to 3+ seconds
This is reproducible every time I toggle QoS on.
Disabling QoS immediately restores normal speeds.
Expected behavior:
QoS with a bandwidth cap slightly below measured capacity should reduce bufferbloat (improve responsiveness under load) with minimal impact on raw throughput. Instead, enabling it catastrophically degrades the connection.
What I need:
- Confirmation this is a known bug or that my configuration is expected to work
- A firmware fix if this is a known bug
- If there's a specific configuration that makes QoS work correctly on this model, please share it
- Information on whether upcoming firmware releases address QoS behavior on the BE700
Happy to provide additional test data, speed test outputs, or logs if helpful.
Thanks, Ben Daniel
