Looks like the latest firmware update fixes this issue. Updating firmware and redownloading OpenVPN configs works as expected now.

@Kevin_Z I've done both steps. The config file is small and I can make it work locally on my mac. I'll submit a ticket as requested later today.

@mjheaberlin Same here. Did you ever figure it out? I'm using OpenVPN configurations from PIA. They work with OpenVPN Connect, and they don't on my AX1800. Nothing in the logs even though I raised...
